  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Widely focussed around learning and development. Using the internal skills platform to develop technical expertise and attending classes and workshops. The business aspect of the role includes working closely with mentors and contributing to sales cycles where possible. Applying learnt knowledge to real life examples to result in a higher contributions in the near future.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes many. I have had to develop my personal initiative by being able to decide what learning choices may be most critical to develop. Learned how to correctly communicate technology solutions and confidently communicate and speak to an audience. I have also developed new technical skills and continue to do so every day

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • There is no part I do not thoroughly enjoy. University is interesting though I do look forward for the days I am working and contributing to IBM. There is a sense of community and everyone who I have spoken to is very inviting towards apprentices and seeks to help you develop.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very well structured to a certain point. My role is different to others as I am in sales so do not have a list of A,B and C I need to complete that day. I am able to have flexibility within the structure to have autonomy over who my mentors are and what work I am interested in shadowing and ultimately contributing to. IBM listens to the interests you express and will encourage you to pursue them within the area of the business you are in. The mix of organisation and autonomy is great.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Endless amounts if needed. I have multiple people to reach out to if I have concerns and I do even if it isn't anything too weighted. Everyone I have spoken to listen and understands the support you may need. I am also aware of other people and schemes for issues that carry more weight and know i would be fully supported if I needed it.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Winchester University is well established and provides support when needed. All module tutors are willing to speak outside lessons and the work is transferrable to work. The work I do is also transferrable and mentors at the day job understand it would be important and useful if they catered their provided learning with links to what I am studying at university.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I am in first year of university so have not specialised yet. Every module can be transferrable though i know i will see this more in second year. There have been 2 seperate modules for academic and workplace skills which have been very useful. As well as technical modules like cyber security. software engineering, not so much.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Endless amounts. I participate in 2 communities. I am an events team member for a wellbeing community and an assistant lead for the PWDA communuity. We have arranged lots of events and I have attended other community events too. There is football, netball, pub quizzez, networking oppertunities and loads more. They arent specifically arranged by the company though have the companies support.

  • 9a. Would you recommend IBM to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have recently referred by friend to IBM, after working here for 8 months. The culture is unbeatable and everyone cares about your growth and development. I have not met someone who isn't interested in what I have to say. Everyone is like minded and also unique and an individual. I once was asked by an applicant about how you can ask for more responsibly if you wanted it. This question stuck with me and my answer was along the lines of the fact that the company provides you with a role. You can make that role your own. The level of responsbility is already high and is a role within the company, not just an apprentice role.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to IBM?
  • Be yourself and be confident. IBM do not have an interest if you got bad grades or good grades, they care about you as a person and care about what you could bring to the company. They want you to succeed to having passion and willingness to learn is key.
