  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a software apprentice, my role involves working on various features of the software systems we develop. On a day-to-day basis, I use a Kanban system to manage my tasks and progress. This involves taking tickets, reviewing the requirements, and implementing the necessary changes. I work closely with my team members to ensure that we deliver high-quality software solutions on time and within budget. My daily tasks also include conducting code reviews, writing unit tests, and debugging issues that arise during the development process.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During my apprenticeship, I have learned several new skills and developed existing ones. Specifically, I have gained expertise in Python and Ruby on Rails, which are important programming languages for software development. I have also acquired network skills such as working with Cisco and Juniper devices. In fact, I have achieved a Juniper DevOps certification, which has helped me to better understand the process of developing and deploying software in a network environment. Overall, my apprenticeship has provided me with a great opportunity to enhance my skills and knowledge in various areas of software development and networking.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my apprenticeship programme. It has provided me with a great opportunity to learn and grow in my field of interest. I appreciate the hands-on experience that the programme offers, as it allows me to work on real-world projects and learn from experienced professionals in the industry. I also enjoy the collaborative nature of the programme, as I work closely with my team members and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality software solutions. Overall, I am grateful for the opportunities that my programme has provided me and I look forward to continuing to learn and grow in my career.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure and organisation of my apprenticeship program have been somewhat challenging. While there have been some positive aspects to the program, such as the hands-on experience and the opportunity to work with experienced professionals, there have been areas where the structure and organisation have been lacking. organisation of my apprenticeship program have been a bit inconsistent, with frequent changes to aspects of the program that are sometimes communicated at the last moment.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have received a significant amount of support from my employer throughout my apprenticeship. My employer has provided me with regular 1-1s, team meetings, and daily stand-ups, which have helped me to stay on track and address any issues that arise in a timely manner. Additionally, my current team has a dedicated sub-team that is responsible for onboarding and teaching new joiners, which has been a valuable resource for me as a new apprentice.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • have received a significant amount of support from my training provider while working towards my qualifications. The lectures have been very knowledgeable and passionate about their subject matter, and they have been very supportive and encouraging in helping me to achieve my goals. Whenever I have had questions or needed assistance with assignments or coursework, they have been available and responsive, providing helpful feedback and guidance

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • While some of the current modules of my qualification through my training provider may not directly align with my day-to-day responsibilities as a software apprentice, I believe that the program will still be beneficial to me in the long run. For example, some of the foundational knowledge and skills that I am learning in the early stages of the program may not be directly applicable to my current role, but they will likely help me to become a more well-rounded and capable software developer

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are some, but not many activities that I can get involved in at my work. For example, we have a yearly developer conference, which provides an opportunity for developers and other team members to come together, share knowledge, and network with one another. Additionally, we have team activities around holidays, such as Christmas, where theses events have been a great way to get to know my colleagues better.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • BT has been an amazing company to work for, who really do care about their apprentices and treat them like fully fledged team members. We get to work on major projects that make an major impact to BT, and their customers. Apprentices are given the time they need to work on their qualifications and support is always there if we need it.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
  • My main bit of advise would be to go for it, its an amazing apprenticeship which give you a head start into software, networking, cyber and other areas of technology. Develop your skills, especially soft skills as they come in handy in multiple situation. The main bit of advice is to make the most of it and strive to learn as much as you can.
