  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Manage package commercially, this involves issuing instructions and reviewing with the PQS' and Client to make sure there are valid, reviewing applications for payments and issuing payment notices, putting payments on system to make sure sub contractors are paid the correct amount and on time, managing cash flow for the Client.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt day-to-day adulting skills in terms of time management and being able to liaise with senior members of the team, my confidence has increased massively in the past 18 months and this is something that my friends and family have picked up on. I have also been able to understand the process of construction projects.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the office environment with the mix of being able to go on site and see what I have been working on. The mix of ages creates a good balance of knowing who to go to for help and who I can go to for a chat. I enjoy that as an apprentice we have regular meetings to check we are on the right track.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • We have cohort training days throughout the year where we travel to dartford or manchester, this gives us a chance to meet with other apprentices who started with the company at the same time. Previous training courses have included managing our priorities and influencing our destiny which helps us to plan our future.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We are regular checked up on in terms of the team I work with, managers and even uni. we have quarterly meetings with my uni tutor and manager to set goals and reflect on what i've been working on. LOR also give us time to do uni work throughout the year.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We have access to books and resources that can help with our learning, we are also able to converse with co-workers who can give us a real-life in site to the job. We are also reminded throughout our apprenticeships of our end point assessment which helps QS's to become chartered.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Construction Technology 1 - this module is mapped against the Chartered Surveyor Degree Apprenticeship Standard in relation to health and safety, sustainability and construction technology skills, health and safety, construction technology and costing and cost planning of construction works knowledge and treat others with respect behaviours. QS Private and Commercial Practice 1 - this module is mapped against the Chartered Surveyor Degree Apprenticeship Standard in relation to information management and construction technology skills, costing and cost planning of construction works knowledge, and act in a way that promotes trust in the surveying profession and take responsibility behaviours.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I am a member of my local running team who go on multiple runs throughout the week with various ages and abilities, this also encourages me to enter races and events, I recently did a 10k. I am also a member of my local gym as I find this helps me unwind from a busy days work.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Laing O'Rourke to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Through my apprenticeship (year 2 of 5) I have been guided and given the necessary help and resources to help me do well within my career, all the people I work with out pleasant which makes coming to the office a breeze, I have never dreaded a days work, and each day gets better as I gain more responsibility.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Laing O'Rourke?
  • Don't stress the interview - you'll end up fumbling :) Even if you don't have any understanding of the job role, as long as you have the required skills and qualifications you have the ability to understand the role. I became a trainee QS without even knowing what one was, and since my first day my knowledge has expanded.
