  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in an admin office based at Matalan distribution centre. Our team here support the site by organising documents, filing, dealing with queries, updating records, dealing with pay queries, collecting payroll data to send to the payroll department, book meeting rooms, take meeting notes, support management teams by providing them with correct data etc.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since working here my excel skills have increased vastly and this is due to me using excel on a daily basis. Since starting my apprenticeship I have developed my communication skills, both written and verbal. My organisation skills have also got better since starting my apprenticeship as I am learning how to prioritise and also having to work my normal day job and study has been a bit of a struggle at the start but thankfully I am now getting the balance right!

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I absolutely love this programme. Naturally I love studying, learning new things and just overall being involved in some form of training etc. I find the online portal is very user friendly and some of the interactive parts are actually quite fun to use! I am enjoying seeing my progress online as it marks out where you are on a timeline.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The online portal is very organised, each month your tasks are there with a date they should be completed by. There is lots of information to keep you on track and the topics are kept together meaning you aren’t learning a bit of this and then leaving it for months and then going back.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My line manager is extremely supportive and allows me time to do my work. Also as I am having to take my functional skills maths exam as well she has been very supportive in helping me achieve this by giving me some learning tips, helping me when I’m struggling and again allowing me the time to learn.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have my tutor who I can contact at any time for support and help. I have found that no problem is ever too small, they will always help out. All my maths online sessions have been booked accurately, the teams meetings are always very positive and supportive! Very happy with the support.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Although I am not in a HR team, a lot of what we do is HR focused. We deal with new starter packs from colleagues, we assist colleagues with queries, we have a close relationship with the HR team and payroll. I have found that this course is helping me massively in areas where normally I wouldn’t typically have the knowledge!

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We do have a sports and social club here at work that for a very small fee per month you can get heavily discounted tickets to various events ranging from theatre visits, trips to London, spa days and days out for your children. Throughout the year there are different events you can attend for example the most recent was a staff Christmas party!

  • 9a. Would you recommend Matalan to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • For the last 3 years I have worked here I have received nothing but support, a friendly face and people always willing to go the extra mile for you. There are such lovely people that work here, I have always felt very comfortable in my role. My line manager is also very supportive.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Matalan?
  • Matalan is very family friendly, go the extra mile and provide a supportive place to work. There are many different departments at Matalan and there is always a role for someone! The training and apprenticeships on offer to colleagues is amazing and it’s really good that colleagues have the chance to develop and improve.
