  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Shift manager. My role included managing crew members, admin work, checking, monitoring and correcting inventory, overseeing day to day running of the store, completing regular ‘walk arounds’ / checks of the store for health and safety and cleanliness etc, monitoring metrics , following up on staff training, overlooking delivery procedures and safety.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed many new skills and developed existing skills during my apprenticeship. From starting in a position as crew member when I initially started the apprenticeship to becoming a shift manager during the later portion of it. I have developed time keeping, tasks management, people management, customer service and knowledge of health and safety

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • During parts of the programme I found it tough, and had to persevere through hurdles along the way, but as a whole I really enjoyed the apprenticeship, developing my skills and Learning about different things. Overall my favourite part of the apprenticeship was the opportunities it opened up for me

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I personally found that through the experience my tutors and apprenticeship program was positive, it was well organised and I feel like it helped me complete the apprenticeship program. The only issues I had with support and organisation was through my actual store, my stores business manager and other management

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As my previous answer went through I feel like I’m my experience I received no support from my employer. I was unable to have any off the floor hours or training, everything was in my own time as well as working between 40-60 hrs a week at the time. As well as this when my employer needed to send things off for me he would not do so and just ignore mine and the apprenticeship teams texts, calls and emails

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider was amazing through the whole process. I do not think I would have been able to do it without her and she tried extra extra hard to compensate my employer. I really appreciate the effort she put in and how out of the way she went at times to support me through the qualification

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I have since left however after my apprenticeship I felt more confident in health and safety procedures and legislation. However I think because I was doing a level 2 qualification as a shift manager I did not learn that much or develop my skills in most areas dramatically, if I carried on and continued the high qualifications I may have had a different experience.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is a football sports team once a year and rmhc charity events running throughout the year. Rmhc is a McDonald’s founded charity that supports families of child with childhood terminal illness. It allows families to stay free in houses/accommodation that is nearby to the child’s hospital if it is away from home

  • 9a. Would you recommend McDonald's to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I think McDonald’s can be an amazing company to work for. They are very flexible and therefore can be an extremely convenient job for people who need certain hours e.g. Seasonal workers, students, carers, parents, people working multiple jobs. It also has a lot of potential to progress if desired


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to McDonald's?
  • I would advise others to be clear from the start of what they expect from the job and what the job expects from them. To be strong about scheduling and not allow themselves to be treated badly from management. However if you can hold your boundaries strong then I believe you can have great experience working for mcdonalds.
