Aerospace Engineering Degree Apprenticeship Review

Our role involves multiple courses and qualifications including a level 2 diploma, level 4 diploma and level 6 Bachelor Honours Degree in Mechanical engineering and Electronics. I am currently completing my level 2 diploma and in the next few months I will be undergoing numerous placements in the business of Rolls-Royce itself.

I have developed numerous interpersonal, practical and theoretical skills which I have attained through meeting professionals in this industry, completing hands-on activities such as creating light circuits as well as studying towards a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Electronics. This has given me quite a wide variety of skills to develop on a daily basis.

I really enjoy my programme as it involves learning and earning. I do not have to pay for my University degree and I really enjoy being in the workplace as well. I am constantly learning new skills and meeting new peers which expands my network. I really enjoy the structure to my degree apprenticeship.

The programme in theory is really well organised with numerous different courses in the first year which contributes towards my Level 2 Diploma. However, there have been times where the calendar has changed and I have been left doing different courses to which I am supposed to be doing which has not been ideal.

I receive a lot of support and development from my employer. For example, I have my own apprentice development leader whom which I meet with regularly on a weekly basis to discuss if there are any issues I am facing. These issues usually get resolved really quickly and it provides a good structure to receive support.

There are many opportunities to gain additional help or support when working towards my qualifications. For example, my University degree, Mechanical Engineering with Electronics, has many modules which some find difficult. There are usually sessions offered to us as apprentices to solve any issues or problems when studying the module.

My Mechanical Engineering and Electronics degree has lots of difficult and useful aspects to it which can help me in the workplace environment. However, I believe that the degree is much more complicated in comparison the work which I undergo in my workplace. There are some aspects that are similar but not all.

There are opportunities as apprentices to undergo extra-curricular activities both from my employer and my university. For example, the University of Derby has many societies which I could join in sports for example. Also, my employer provides opportunities to undergo extra-curricular activities such as the apprentice sports day for example which is really good.

I would definitely recommend Rolls-Royce to a friend as it is a really welcoming company with lots of opportunities for apprentices. Many senior members and professionals in the business started off as apprentices so there is almost certainly opportunity to climb the ranks of such a diverse, welcoming company and business.

From my experience in the written question and assessment centre stages, I would recommend that you show your passion and eagerness for engineering and Rolls-Royce itself. Even if you are not the most knowledgeable person in the area of study that you are applying for, if you show true passion and charisma you will tick a lot of boxes for successfully applying for Rolls-Royce.
