I work as a HSEQ (Health Safety, Environment and Quality) Degree apprentice - however the majority of what I do is in Environment and sustainability. This involves making sure we are aligned with environmental laws as a business, as well as increasing the sustainability of our business. I coordinate HSEQ training across CEVA UKI as well as looking after our intranet pages and sending out HSEQ comms to the wider business.
Since getting my apprenticeship, I have developed my communication and presentation skills. I often have to present to various people within the business and I am in constant communication with various stakeholders. I have also developed my creativity skills, as I often create visual material that is sent out to the wider business.
I enjoy the work/learning balance. Every Friday I can step away from my usual day job to focus on university study. I find the content of the lectures mostly interesting and the range of different styles of assessment is good. It an often be difficult to completely dissociate from your job while trying to study however.
The programme is well structured, with two assignments per term. I like the fact that twice per term were attend university in person as I feel this on-campus experience is important. However, due to the nature of my job, it is quite difficult for me to achieve all the KSB's that are required for me to pass my apprenticeship.
The support I receive from my employer is good - they are always on hand to help me with anything day to day - and they are understanding that I may not be as adept as more experienced team members. I would say that the support from my employee in terms of me achieving my KSB's could be improved.
The support I receive from Aston university is good - the lectures and assessments are tailored to the KSB objectives required for passing the apprenticeship. However it can sometimes be difficult to get in contact with lecturers as I have found that some can be unresponsive to emails. However overall it is good.
I would say that it does help me in my role, as it gives me a better understanding of my business as a whole. However the content of my course is not that closely related to what I do day to day, so I wouldn't say it helps me to perform better at my job
I often attend external events that give me and opportunity to network. I often get invited to corporate events. My team quite often go out after work, or have team socials that help us to perform better as a team. This may involve a meeting then an over night stay. Unfortunately there are no sports teams
Yes
I would recommend CEVA Logistics to a friend as I can see a clear career progression for myself. I get involved with lots of senior people within the business and I feel this will significantly benefit me in the long run. I do believe that the salary could be more competitive compared to those on my university course in similar positions - however the long term opportunities are very good.
Go for it! There is a lot of good things about CEVA that make it a great employer for apprentices. I get lots of opportunities to do things I wouldn't get to do in full time education. Prepare well for interviews and have a good understanding of the company. Make sure to be yourself
