  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I create 3D models of powerlines and use LiDAR data to ensure there are no clashes. I also conduct clearance checks for when spacer trolleys go across the line to ensure that no clearances are infringed. I also help the design team to put bids together for tenders, including work breakdown structures.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have become proficient in the use of CAD software, which is a good transferable skill to have. I have also got to grips with PLS CADD, which is a much more technical piece of software used to model the over head line. I have more confidence, better communication skills and I am more computer literate.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy coming to work and learning new things. Going to site is one of the best experiences I have at work. I enjoy seeing construction works commence and learn immense amounts from talking to the guys on site. The people I have met while on my apprenticeship are some of my closest friends.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured. There is an early careers plan which includes lots of courses and training for health and safety and to learn all the foundations of engineering. I have also been part of the Balfour Beatty Apprentice Challenge which included a residential programme and lots of team building activities.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is very supportive when I require it. I have monthly one to ones with my line manager to ensure I am doing okay and keeping on top of my progress. I also have a work mentor who attends sessions with my university mentor to ensure I am attending university and keeping up to date with my IEng reports.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Nottingham Trent University put the apprentices together with the full time students for our lectures in this year at university. Last year there was more 121 sessions which are much better and beneficial, I have told the university but they do not want to change the timetable. I have also proclaimed issues with the timing of sessions and short deadlines of coursework which gets no response.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Because the work I do is so niche, there is no way it would be taught at university. The work at university is incredibly structural based which I will not use at my workplace. The ground engineering side is useful and interesting and if there is the opportunity to work in the foundations team.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I have recently attended a Women in Engineering event at National Grid for apprentices within the engineering industry. This was good to meet new people from across the field. There is also a football match which occurs every month which I attend. There is lots of social events at work which includes free food at lunch time, cocktail making, meals out, yoga and other sports activities.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Balfour Beatty is a good place to work as the work is very interesting. It is a niche job to have which people are impressed about. The people who work at Balfour Beatty are nice and easy to get along with, and the support you receive to further your career is fantastic.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
  • It is important to know a little into the background of the company. Also, if you can learn anything about what Balfour Beatty do (Overhead lines) that will be really good as not many people will know a lot about it. Be confident and ask lots of questions as this is always a good sign.
