  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Generally I will be carrying out Pre Delivery Inspections, services or other standard maintenance tasks, as well as house keeping jobs such as emptying bins, sweeping up the workshop, disposing of scrap metal. I also join the other techs on jobs they’re doing to help them out and to further my own knowledge and experience.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed a lot of new skills throughout my apprenticeship, be it basic maintenance like brake pad and disc replacement, servicing independently or even learning the processes on how to follow a diagnosis, this allows me to use the tools I have and run though a series of tests and probable causes to narrow down the result of the issue.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my programme, I enjoy taking part in Virtual Classrooms since it is a lot more convenient than having to commute to college, I can come to work as normal and spend part of the day in an office learning all the theory of the current topic in preparation to go away to the Henry Ford Academy for a week and put what I’ve learned into practice as well as reinforcing my understanding.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme has had a set structure from the day I joined and has supplied every student with the information for every block of learning we have, what the topic will be for it, and the dates and times of when we will need to attend Virtual Classrooms for it and when we will need to attend the Henry Ford Academy.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I am supported fully by my employer in all aspects, from being trusted to carry out tasks which gives me more confidence to carry out the task, to being a part of a very friendly team where each person is more than happy to lend a hand with any problem or issue.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have received a great amount of support from the tutors at the Henry Ford Academy and they work very hard to put the learners needs forward, making tasks specific to each learner to support them individually. At the beginning of my apprenticeship the providers skillscoaches were not much help and I would see mine a lot less than I needed to, however they have heavily worked on the system and have brought in new skillscoaches that are a lot more effective at putting the learners needs first.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My own knowledge has been endlessly expanded from my training, I have been taught a vast amount of skills and techniques, but also really reinforcing my understanding so I have a grasp on what the issue in the task I am working on is, without having the understanding my role would be a lot more difficult.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There may be some activities that I do not know about as a lot of the company uses an intranet, however being a technician we don’t often get chance to go onto a computer to look through these. However we will have Christmas do’s where we’ll go out for a drink or an event.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have really enjoyed my time at the company already and I have been made aware of every system we have in place for any sort of support an employee may need, such as our people’s champion whom is trained in mental health first aid and can refer you to further schemes for support. Also every day can be very different and the work we do is very challenging and fulfilling.
