  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Very similar to an APM, chasing people to make sure actions are complete, taking meetings every so often, and generally assisting the project manager on the project. I currently manage documents and help drive focus around areas of work that need to be complete, i also get involved with the financial management of the project.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am constantly learning, this is from my manager really helping me access new areas and that is a topic of discussion when we meet up on a Monday morning. He will ask me is there anything i want to get involved in this week and he also gives me suggestions.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I do enjoy my programme, the work can be challenging at times but i have always had someone there in my smaller or wider team that are at the end of a teams message or call. Everyone at Thames is really kind and welcoming and i get on really well with the other apprentice PMs and we often go out and have socials away from work.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Work is just like a normal job and all apprentices will have a different experience. I believe the structure is good as that is how you learn, by being thrown in at the deep end. I believe there could maybe be a bit more structure where apprentices do similar things or the things we do are aligned, but that is very hard to do that

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Lots, if i need anything there is always someone to talk to or help me which is really comforting from a person who has just left school in to the big world of work. I just advise that you push yourself to ask questions early so it doesn't be harder for you to ask later

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Help where needed they are always at the end of an email. some lecturers offer more help than others but if help is needed they are willing to call you and help or just respond to an email quickly. This is very helpful especially when there is a burning issue whilst working in your own time.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It is very good as lots of the learning that we cover at uni I come across it at work meaning i feel like i have a head start either at uni or work. This has definitely helped a lot as instead of having no clue i know where to start.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there are lots. There are socials after work quite often and sometimes smaller team socials as well. Not just this but there is a Thames Water Sunday league team that welcome players and it is a great way to socialise with other people in the business you may not have any contact with.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Thames Water to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would definitely recommend Thames to a friend and I have. As a new apprentice fresh from school it was a bit daunting joining a big organisation like Thames. But I have felt nothing but welcome from everyone here and fell really supported in all of my work. So I felt part of a real team almost immediately and settled right in. The main thing is I enjoy my job and that is one thing that i find non-negotiable in life and i have found that here at Thames

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Thames Water?
  • Be open and ask lots of questions and be keen to get involved in anything. I find this the best way to learn is just by being exposed to anything and everything as it is likely i will have to experience it one day so the sooner the better. I also recommend talking to lots of different people all over the business and making connections inside but also outside of work.
