  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • my typical day as an apprentice quantity surveyor within the Thames Water working on waste infrastructure projects includes reviewing applications for payment from contractors on a monthly basis and making assessment and them making payments, creating purchasing orders to enable the payment to happen. meet with project managers to discuss project commercial issues otehr interactions include working with other senior QS within the team, contractors project team, estimating team.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt lots of new skills while completing my apprenticeship, especially my understanding of contraction technology which i had not been exposed to before, also developed my skill of working with excel and formulas which has been especially useful when reviewing application and making cost comparisons, i have also learnt a lot about how our water industry works

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have enjoyed the quantity surveyor apprenticeship programme that has ben provided by Thames Water as it has enable my to complete degree level study while also getting work place experience so i am able to put that i am learning at university into practice really making the content relatable and interesting

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well organised/structured both at Thames Water and at the university of estate management. at Thames it is made sure that we complete our 20% of the job training during the week with continuous check in with both line managers and apprenticeship partner at Thames. also at UCEM the weeks of study are well structured with takes to complete each week at aid with learning.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Thames Water give a lot of support to the apprentices with check in with the apprenticeship engagement perter, they also make sure you have a line manager who provides you with continuous check ins, there is also apprentice community which provide learning opportunities and the chance to have a mentor within the business to help with your progression

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The university provide support to apprentices by assigning an apprenticeship outcome officer, with whom you meet with every few month with your line manager to discuss progression and any learning you have completed along with setting targets for you to achieve, within the actual course the module tutor and team provide support via forums and one to ones

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I believe that the training provided has helped in to perform my role as it has given me a greater understanding of the role as a whole providing me with information that i have gone on to use in my everyday tasks, there has and to be a slight adjustment due to the course being tailored to house construction and the job role within the utilities industry

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • there is a lot of extra curricular activities to get involved with at teams, they have a extensive support network for everyone with a large focus on diversity. there is women's networks, BAME networks and lots more. there is also opportunity to twice a year take part in volunteer activities and teh yearly raft race to raise money for water aid

  • Yes

  • i would recommend working at Thames Water to a friend as they provide lots of opportunities to learn and develop leading to progression within the company, there is also a large community vibe within Thames that looks after the employee with lots of benefits on offer to help you out if you require it


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Thames Water?
  • the advice i would give to someone when applying is to make sure that you do your research no just on the company as a whole and their ethos and goals for the future but also on the water industry to make sure you understand the sector which you are going to be entering
