My role is to help design and create products to help progress MRI technology forwards. Specifically, I spend time on CAD softwares, creating 3D models, 2D drawings, taking inspiration from the manufacturing environment and my degree knowledge to increase efficiency and improve performance.
I have learned how to use CAD softwares. I have learned how to use advanced technology methods. More fundamentally, I have learned how to travel across the country - given a split time spent in both Sheffield and Oxford, I have also learned to be professional - specifically with regard to finances.
Being an engineer was something I wasn't 100% sure I would enjoy on the offset. I enjoyed design and technology given a background in art, and having spent 6 months as an engineer, I can confidently say that being an engineer is right for me - I greatly enjoy it.
My programme is well structured with an initial training period in which I have learned how to be an engineer. It suffers slightly with regard to the locations - Sheffield + Oxford not being particularly close, but it is surmountable and not something that I feel is a deal breaker.
My employer has been extremely supportive, with one to one sessions, conversations and time spent learning. I have no complaints at all.
Support is very good from my training provider though given this is a more independent study, and is assumed to be done in our own time, it is by nature less supported than other aspects of my time. I do however feel comfortable with asking questions if I feel necessary.
The qualification directly correlates with my job role - teaching me the necessary skills - so very well.
So far, spending my time in Sheffield, I have yet to be involved in extra-curricular work activities, though I have been able to get involved with activities with the University. When I move more permanently to Oxford, I believe I will be able to get involved in work activities instead.

I feel I am working for a good cause, Siemens Healthineers changes lives with industry leading healthcare technology and working, even in a small way, towards helping that goal is something that at my young age, I feel privileged to be able to do.
Be yourself, they do not want you to be someone you're not and they do not expect you to know everything. It is important to show an interest and demonstrate your willingness to help and take on responsibilities. Showing aspiration, but recognising your place is also very good.
