My role as a Construction Management Apprentice is to manage sub-contractors on site and ensure they are working safely and effectively. Daily activities include, signing RAMS, carrying out inductions, equipment checks, Daily activity briefings, Daily diaries, checking work out on site, progress meetings and general liason between the site operatives, sub-contractors and site office team.
I have massively developed my communication skills, which were already very strong. I have learned how to communicate with trades to ensure I have a good relationship with them so that they feel confident to come to me with any issues and that they are willing to share information about their work. New skills would include presenting skills and I am now confident enough to chair my own meetings.
I love the program I am currently working on and feel that I am given massive support to really succeed and develop as a manager with the support of my site team who always have time for me. Everyone takes time to teach me things and this is helped by the Mace emerging talent team who encourage us to network, see other sites and learn every day.
There is a solid foundation in which the emerging talent team set us up. We have regular internal training as well as regular external training and are supported to complete each. We are also given qualifications to complete, i am currently completing a level 6 NVQ after completing a HNC and feel this has helped me massively in my career.
Massive support mostly from my site specific team and the people i work with daily. i have good relationships with everyone so feel confident to ask for help. I also always receive support whenever I ask, and the emerging talent team are always a teams message away.
The support from London Southbank university was and still is poor. They do not sacrifice much time to help us with our work and instead most of us were self led in our studies. Although the support was available, it was not always enthusiastic towards the students on the course.
We have lots of networking events and i have met a lot of apprentices on the course also, however have aso had the environment to speak to other managers, directors an project leads on a regular basis. They are always happy to engage in conversation with us. We also often have wellbeing days regularly in the office, sometimes having furry friends visiting!
Yes
Big company with a wide repertoire, they a,ways provide support and help and every day is different
Be yourself first and foremost. Always ensure you are clear of what is expected of you, always ask questions no mater how silly it may sound. Try to form good relationships with all work colleagues as they will then always support you. If ever you need anything dont be afraid to ask!
