  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is to supervise and run the store. Opening the store in the morning making sure everything is set out for the day. Helping the online pickers. Helping my staff members wherever needed and doing the basic step by step day. Closing the store, checking lights and cashing up. Locking up as usual.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills in my role. Before working at this store I had never done retail before. My communication skills have definitely developed since working here as well as it’s a very customer forward facing role. Many other skills such as leading a team, have been new skills I have picked up.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme as I know it is developing my knowledge of my role and Iceland as a whole. I like the idea of finishing it at the end and having a proper qualification to prove that I know what I’m doing in my job, and I have developed myself.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The organisation of the programme is very easy to navigate. At first it’s a bit daunting as it looks like there is so much information and bits to go through. But once you get into it, it’s very well structured on how it takes you through each section.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my store manager. He is always there if I need a hand with part of the apprenticeship. He gives me little ideas of things I’ve done for my off the job hours that I wouldn’t always think of.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My Training Provider who helps me with my course is very helpful. She is always there helping me find new ways to add things into my programme or if I’m struggling with a certain topic, she will help find other resources that may make the topic easier for me to understand. We have booked on phone calls to go through these topics also.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think the programme gets you thinking about certain aspects of your role that you wouldn’t necessarily think of when just doing your day to day job. Such as what kind of manager you are: X or Y. Which overall I believe makes me perform better in my role because I look at how I am doing and how much better I could be doing.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We don’t currently have anything like this. Social activities would be us going out as a team.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Iceland to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Out of all of the jobs I have had, this one is definitely the best to me. I have struggled a lot to find a place of work I feel comfortable in. But as soon as I started here and got to know everyone and the job role I just felt like I fit in. I’ve always said to everyone who has asked me, that I feel happy at my job.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Iceland?
  • Just to actually put the effort into your role. Even if you’re just a sales assistant it is worth pushing that extra bit because you will get noticed for it. It’s a very rewarding job and I believe so many people could come into Iceland and think the same.
