  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as a project is within the technology area of Barclays, so involves leading projects that will deliver tech change to improve either the customer or colleague experience. This involves defining scope and requirements, project planning, schedule and resource management, monthly budgeting and cost control. It also requires me to conform with company governance and risk reporting procedures

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I've learnt a lot of new skills, in particular around cost control and risk management. These weren't things I had any responsibility for in previous roles. In terms of my development, I feel the course had helped me to grow my stakeholder management skills, as communication with stakeholders has been one of the key areas for succes of my projects

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed the course, although at times found it difficult to balance the practical workload with the theoretical study. I would say that the most enjoyable part has been being able to apply the learning at the time of studying it. There was so much of the theory that I was able to put into practise straight away as it was all completely relevant to my role

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is generally well organised, with sessions planned in advance and the organisation I work for is very supportive and flexible around the off the job study time. The only thing that was not planned well was the number of systems issues we had in gaining access to relevant websites and even our examination due to the company firewalls on our work devices

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have received a sufficient amount of support. On the whole, Barclays is very supportive of the off the job time required for study and seems to understand that this will be a long term benefit to the company. I think some individual line managers have been more supportive to their apprentices than others

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Multiverse have been great in offering support, we have a dedicated coach who I have had regular 121's with. He's also always available and very quick to respond to any queries or concerns. I've found the individual coaching sessions offered by multiverse particularly beneficial in helping me identify my personal development areas

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The theory learnt through my training provider has definitely helped me to perform better, and I'm sure I have picked up things quicker than I would have it had all been on the job learning. There is a good balance of theory and applied learning and this has worked well

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many different extra curricular activities - too many to mention!! I'm luck to work at a really large site, that's also going through some modernisation. Every day, there is some sort of event to get involved in if you want to, with regular networking events, We even had a bring your dog to work day!

  • 9a. Would you recommend Barclays to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The company has a huge amount of opportunities for progression across many different business areas. They are committed to continuous professional development, and I think it's evident how great the company is when you see so many employees that have gained long service awards. They also have some really great benefits and share saving schemes

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Barclays?
  • Be yourself! Barclays definitely leads the way in terms of equality and diversity in terms of it's recruitment policy. Don't worry if you feel you don't have all the skills to succeed, the company will support you in getting there. Be excited for the future - there's so many different areas to work in Barclays which makes progression highly likely!
