  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role consists of working on different projects in either the banking or corporations sector, supporting them in improving in many different ways. Normally, you'll have daily stand up meetings in the morning with your team, individual tasks are allocated, and then regrouping the next day. Such projects normally consist of frequent meetings with the clients for updates on the work or further input needed.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new things to do with remediation and section 166. As well as this, I have learnt many new skills for formatting on Microsoft Word to produce high quality client deliverables, as well as preparing PowerPoints and formatting data in Excel. This has also taught me the soft skills required to do with working in a team and communication.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme because of how dynamic it is. With consulting, you never do the same thing every day meaning there's always something new to learn. The work environment is very welcoming meaning I enjoy my time when working in office. The fact that hybrid working is also an option increases the flexibility of my role.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is very well structured as the first 3 years acts as an apprenticeship scheme, and the last 3 act as a graduate scheme in terms of the qualifications. In the first 3 years you are guaranteed to rotate around 4 different consulting departments, while you specialise in a department in the last 3.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • You receive a lot of support from KPMG because the tea s are often understanding when allocating work, especially when you have study commitments. They also have an early careers development team that act as a point of contact, and many other colleagues put in place if you ever feel lost

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider also provide different points of contact for us to reach out to if we need it. Before starting a period of study, the tutor also makes their contact available for us to reach out to on any study related enquiries. They also provide materials to revise from.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification, which is the AAT L3 and L4, helps to a degree when it comes to my role. While some consulting departments require a heavy accounting knowledge like forensic consulting, the accounting qualification gives good base knowledge but is not very applicable to my everyday role. Only until 3 years in where my qualification is specific to my department, I feel this may change

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many communities you can join at the firm which you personally identify with. These communities often meet up and organise events. There are many networking events throughout the year to meet many new people, and many socials after work to go out with colleagues and do things together.

  • 9a. Would you recommend KPMG to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend KPMG because overall the work culture is great. The people are diverse, holding many different experiences and background, meaning anybody can find their place there. They are a people-driven business making it a fun place to work as they are genuinely concerned with the personal development of every individual

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to KPMG?
  • I would say that you should just be you when applying, as they value a diversity of people to drive the business. Be confident and do your research as proactiveness is what you need to succeed in a professional services firm, as they tend to have an entrepreneurial aspect to them in terms of building your own career.
