Your main job is to be the one running the team, in order to keep things running smoothly. In the mornings you oversee the online delivery process, during the day you are keeping customers safe while working to fill the shelves, and at night you are in charge of receiving the delivery and efficiently motivating your team to get the stock out in a timely manner ready for the next morning.
Learning to not only work with the team you have in the building at the present time, but working with the team both previous to and following your shift. I have had the chance to develop my skills around motivating team members to work safely, efficiently and as a team.
The programme has been enjoyable so far. I am currently a month into it but I am already learning so many new skills as well as all the behind the scenes work that team leaders don't usually need to know. I look forward to learning more over the next year.
I feel that the programme is very well structured. Looking at what I will be learning over the space of the programme, I can see that I won't be flooded with information, but instead will learn things at a good space. This will help with not feeling overwhelmed. I like that I can go at my own pace with the learning.
My deputy manager has been my key source of support. Having gone through the programme herself, she is aware of the work I need to put in. She is always available for my questions and has been taking time each week to show me how things are done that I haven't been in charge of as of yet.
I know my training provider is only a message away and is there to support me. So far, I haven't needed much support as it is still early days, but the one to one meetings and being able to message when I need help is such a relief when working towards my qualification.
I think working for this qualification is already helping me be better at my current role as I am learning the psychology behind being a leader, as well as more about what may motivate my colleagues. This has helped greatly as I am running the team differently which seems to be showing positive results already.
Our store does not have any extra curricular activities for the staff. I think this may motivate the staff a little more and help with any communication barriers. However, in the time I have been working in the store, we have not had any events. This could be due to covid though and a recent change in management.
Yes
I think that with each shift surrounding different tasks, it gives staff a chance to build or learn new skills. Picking for customer deliveries in the morning and then stock handling at night are very different. This offers some variety to people who think that retail is very repetitive work.
If you are confident in your skills, but also are aware of where you need to improve, it will help you go a long way. Confidence and self awareness will definitely help you climb the corporate ladder, as well as help the team work well together in each different shift.
