My role includes being a team leader for the store, looking after the staff, leading them into giving great customer service, allocating tasks to help the store run and managing their development journey. I also act as a duty manager to open the store in the mornings and to close the store at night
The biggest thing I have learnt is being able to transfer some of my learning into real life practice to develop and maintain my leadership skills. I have also been able to use experiences of working here to attach to my learning, as well as off the job hours too.
The programme itself doesn't require too much of your time as long as you are able to fit in your coursework and make time for meetings. This makes the course more enjoyable than leaving everything to the last minute and feeling overwhelmed. The course goes through the basics so it is suitable for everyone's learning level.
The programme is well structured when it comes to the coursework assigned to you. The platform you use is very easy to navigate and each piece of work comes under a timeline, which helps you know if you are on track or not. It also helps you see the workload you have
My employer has given me all the support I needed and expected. While I am happy to plan my time and get on with the programme, I know my manager is there should I need help or am concerned with anything. He makes time to attend my meetings too, when he is needed.
My training provider has helped me understand what is expected of me in order to complete the course. She has taken into consideration my own learning needs and made sure to reassure me in the areas I am worried about. The regular check-ins offer an opportunity to talk things through such as the assessments.
The qualification gives me more confidence in my role, as there is knowledge to help consolidate my practice. It helps to have that learning along side the job role, so that I can be more prepared and confident in my own leadership capabilities. It also helps my own professional development
One of the best things about working at B&Q is the extra activities and opportunities open to you. From different webinars, mylo modules, courses, apprenticeships, shadowing opportunities and different store visits - there is a vast amount to get involved in should you want to. I would highly encourage everyone to try them
Yes
B&Q is a great place to work, especially if you have a fantastic management team - which I am fortunate to have. It's not just working in retail. You get to be part of delivering excellent customer service to help people create and build a home they'll love. Plus there is always room for progression
Don't feel silly for asking questions - it is the best way to learn. Be like a sponge and absorb everything - even if you think it is not relevant. Try your best at everything, work as a team, be open to new opportunities and get close to your management team.
