Building financial models in MS Excel and Power BI, reviewing external (client) models and peer reviewing models built by colleagues. There is also a consulting element to the role and frequent exposure to and interaction with various clients from a vast array of sectors ranging from government to small private enterprise.
I have learned how to use Excel to build models, including the use of VBA to create advanced automation functionality. I have also been trained in the use of Power BI, SQL and Alteryx. Technical skills are important to my role and I am continuously trying to develop these through client work and self-directed learning.
The programme is hard work but generally enjoyable. Studying alongside full-time work is a challenge but I feel that KPMG offer a lot of support with this, including study leave days. I enjoy the technical aspects of the work, as well as getting to work with the people I work with.
The programme is very well organised and structured. I know well in advance when my study periods and exams will be which allows me to plan ahead with client work and personal holidays. Exams are booked for me and all training materials provided. When not studying I am treated as a regular permanent member of the team.
KPMG offer a lot of support both with day-to-day work and studying. They take care of scheduling tuition and exams, as well as providing all training materials and paying all fees for tuition and exams. They also offer study leave days to allow me to focus on revision when exams are coming up, and supported re-sits for failed exams.
The training provider are extremely supportive. Tutors are very responsive to emails and messages, and they also provide me with a performance support coach who is able to help with the less technical side of studying such as creating study plans and timetables. They help to book exams and offer out of hours forums on the day before to help with last minute queries.
The qualification has given me a really good base of business acumen so far and a thorough understanding of accounting policies. Many of the concepts taught as part of my qualification are relevant to my day to day role and this helps both to consolidate the material for exams and for me to perform better in my role.
Yes, there are several employee networks that I am a part of, such as the women's network and social mobility network. Social activities are held regularly both by my direct team and by the Bristol office more widely which are always fun, well planned and well attended by all.
Yes
KPMG are a very supportive employer, and the work is enjoyable. There are lots of extra-curricular socials and networks to get involved in and so many interesting people to meet. There is a lot of opportunity for career progression, and the quality of training is very good. I feel like I have learned a lot and I am satisfied in my career.
Be yourself throughout the application process. Make sure that KPMG values align with your personal values and think about where in your career so far you have demonstrated these values. Make sure you have a clear reason for applying for KPMG and the specific role you have chosen and make sure you can articulate this.
