I have been exposed to a wide range of different responsibilities since joining severn trent. this includes final accounting, contract procurement and I have recently been appointed as a Commercial Lead on a project. This includes advising delivery teams from a commercial standpoint and helping ensure efficiency is optimised during this process.
Due to the wide variety of tasks and activities that I have been exposed to, I have both developed new skills and built on pre-existing ones. Effective communication and teamwork are both essential to performing well as a team and since joining, I have excelled in building on these skills and understanding new methods of how to put these skills into action.
I am really enjoying my programme so far. The support from my manager and mentor has been excellent and the balance between work and University is fantastic. It allows me to gain skills on the job while continuing my studies and implementing this into my day to day work. This provides two ways to build my knowledge for this role.
The programme is very well structured. With regular training and exposure to a wide variety of tasks, the programme ensures you're always kept busy with either work and university modules. The training also ensures that you are always learning new skills and understanding areas of the business that you may not experience everyday
Severn Trent have been fantastic since I joined. I have daily calls with my manager who is always supportive and provides support on tasks that I find difficult. There is always someone in the office who is willing to walk you through different processes and help you understand how things work.
University offers enough guidance and support as you need. If you are confident to complete modules and coursework independently, you have the freedom to work through the tasks, whereas if you need more support, everyone is willing to help; whether that's over email/message or during face to face lectures.
Due to the nature of my role in Severn Trent, the university side of the qualification isnt as relevant as I first imagined. The Uni side provides an all round idea of the quantity surveying role whereas at work, I'm exposed to a more commercial side of quantity surveying that is tailored to the water industry. However, the uni and work elements of the role provide a fantastic all round picture of the quantity surveying role and the skills required to excel.
As a new-starter in Severn Trent, you're always invited to social events that allow you to network with others across the business which is great for making companions in other areas of Severn Trent. There are also numerous charity events, whether this be football matches, bike rides .ect which helps, again, in building relationships across the business.
Yes
It is a great company that builds your knowledge and skills, not only from an employee perspective but from a personal perspective as well. Its social events and collaborative environment allow you to build relationships across the business. There are countless opportunities for training which help build your knowledge whilst you're also being exposed to challenges, thus allowing you to develop into a fantastic professional.
Be yourself. Everyone is always really helpful and willing to offer you guidance, they understand that joining a large business may be stressful so they guide you through the application process and the interviews are interactive and relaxed. There's no reason why you shouldn't apply for a position in Severn Trent, its a fantastic place to work.
