  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Every day I come into work and do a gap walk, which consists of scanning missing gaps and finding the products to keep on top of stock accuracy. I serve people on the desk and advise customers with their questions and queries. I complete daily missing label checks so customers have and accurate idea on prices.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Throughout my apprenticeship, I have learnt many new skills that have helped me with my day to day job role. Such as the importance of communication, working within a team and time management. Overall I have gained more confidence within my role and I am able to help train other new colleagues.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoyed my apprenticeship as it helped me gain lots of confidence within my daily job role and within myself. I spoke to lots of new people and have kept them in my contact list if I need their skills in the future. I also appreciate the relationship I have with my apprenticeship coach Ashleigh for helping me throughout.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • We had our ILP to guide us through what we were going to do throughout the course. Every 2 months we had to complete the set work which was given to us, this also included the standards we had to use. If I had been having any issues or questions Ashleigh was always there to advise.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I regularly communicated with my managers to organise when my calls were going to be with them and when I needed to complete the work given. This gave my manager time to prepare for when I was going to be in the office. If there was anything I had to do physically in store my line manager talked me through everything thoroughly, so I had a better understanding.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • After originally not passing maths in my GCSEs, I had been given maths lessons with a tutor to help me revise for my re-take exam. From all this support I now have a Level 2 Maths qualification. As for the Customer Service apprenticeship, my training provider had been their every step of the way and she had always made an effort if I had been struggling with anything.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Now I am on the way to finishing my apprenticeship, I feel more confident in my role and I am able to complete my daily job roles correctly, also to a high standard. I am able to advice my colleagues with anything they may be struggling with give our customers the best possible experience.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • As my role is Store Customer Assistant I am not really given the opportunity to go to any networking events. As a store our management team organise social events such as a bowling and dinners. This helps us bond as colleagues making it a friendly and enjoyable place to work. If given the chance to be invited to networking events I will take up on their offer.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Wickes to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I recommend Wickes as a place to work because the staff are always friendly and the management (Preston Store) always wants the best outcome for you. they care a lot about mental health and diversity so everyone feels comfortable. I would 100% recommend Wickes to Part-Time staff/Students as Wickes offer flexible hours and a good pay. However, as for Full Time colleagues that don't want to progress, I would personally say there are better opportunities out there.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Wickes?
  • As said in the previous question, Wickes is a good place to work if you are using it as a stepping stone to either progress in the company or to another career completely. There are lots of opportunities through out the company as we have stores nationwide, we also have a variety of roles such as IT, Marketing, Kitchen and Bathroom Installers or Warehouse operatives.
