As a learning designer for the DWP I create learning materials for new starters and existing colleagues that need upskilling in certain subjects, (this is usually due to changes in policy.) I collaborate with various stake holders and other members of my team to produce work that is accurate and engaging for the learner.
I have learnt a lot since joining my department, I am relatively new to the DWP so working on some different projects has helped me to gain knowledge which I can use in my role. Taking on the apprenticeship has really helped me as I have been learning about subjects that I haven't looked at before, all of them are increasing my knowledge of the people profession.
I am really enjoying it, It can sometimes be a little daunting when I have deadlines to meet and workloads are high, but I love to learn, and this is such an amazing opportunity. I don't ever think that you are too old to learn new things and build your skills and being able to do this alongside work is fantastic.
I am finding it really well structured, it's easy to navigate and having a work coach to support me is invaluable. I like the dashboard set up that I have as it allows me to see what work I have coming up that is due and this helps me to plan my time effectively.
My line manager is really supportive and ensures that I have the time I need to complete my work. They are consciously supporting my apprenticeship by helping me to apply my learned knowledge and complete work-based activities that I need to do as part of my course work and having regular meetings with me to keep up to date with my progress.
I get all the support that I need from my support coach, she is easily contactable through email and on the bud platform and we have been having regular calls to discuss my progress and any problems that I am experiencing. She will also read any drafts of work that I send and give me constructive criticism.
I definitely feel that my apprenticeship is helping me in my role, it is helping me build confidence and understand the bigger picture in terms of my organisation. It is also pushing me to step out of my comfort zone which in turn is helping me to meet people from other teams and different areas of the business and encouraging networking.
There are a lot of things available to employees at the DWP, one main social network is Hassra, which we are able to join. They offer various activities outside of work, including quiz nights and sport events and also creative pursuits such as photography and art competitions and even baking competitions! There are also various networking opportunities available through work such as clubs and initiatives that you can volunteer to help with.

I have worked here for two years now and I have had so many opportunities to upskill and learn, it's been amazing. The flexibility of hybrid working and flexi time has helped me achieve a better work life balance as a working mum of two. I am able to be there when my kids need me but still work full time and focus on my own goals. It is also such a supportive place to work and very inclusive, I feel that I can be myself.
Do your research! The application process and interviews are very different to others that I have experienced, it is vital that you read up about how they assess behaviours and strengths so that you can be fully prepared. I would also advise anyone to just have a go, there is no harm in applying and even if you don't get the job you are applying for, the experience will help you when you apply for the next. Also, though it may be difficult to get in at first, once you are offered a role you have endless opportunities to progress your career or change it's path.
