I am an internal audit apprentice at Barclays. The internal audit department provides independent assurance regarding the activities of the bank and my daily role includes planning, gathering information, testing evidence and reporting results as part of a team.
I am currently developing my IT, communication and teamwork skills as part of my daily role. Alongside my internal audit work, I am studying towards a Level 4 Internal Audit Practitioner qualification which develops my business knowledge, alongside personal skills and professional behaviours.
I really enjoy my role and wish I'd known about it earlier. I undertook the apprenticeship as part of a career change and feel thoroughly supported as I gain experience on the job. More people should know that this is an opportunity available to a wide age range!
The apprenticeship is well structured and I have regular access to talent coaches both at Barclays and with my training provider so I can always seek help if needed. I have received high quality training and am enjoying the learning challenge!
I feel well supported by my employer who provide a wide range of benefits, as well as access to social activities. 20% of my working time is spent on study and I have a supportive team who help me to gain the experience I need.
I have regular coaching sessions with my training provider talent coach and can contact her easily with any questions or concerns. They provide great online learning tools which help me to develop my personal skills.
I am part way through my first qualification and find that all the training I undertake helps me to understand my job role better and contribute more to my team. All of the trainers I have worked with so far have been friendly, approachable and supportive.
There are lots of social activities to get involved with, pastoral care and opportunities to learn about different aspects of life. The company host plenty of networking events for apprentices and graduates, designed to help school leavers build their professional skills.
Yes
I would recommend Barclays because I have found the culture to be an extremely positive and supportive one. I can see myself working there on a long term basis.
Think of ways in which you can demonstrate the Barclays mindset and values, whether it's an activity where you worked well as part of a team, showed leadership or a passion for learning. And go for it!
