  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Interacting with guests and team members throughout the whole shift, checking them into the hotel, serving them at the bar and booking them in for breakfast and dinner. The shift will also involve working in the restaurant, seating people taking their orders, having allergy training and knowing how to take orders from people with allergies. Also being up to date on company policy as well as GDPR when it comes to checking people in and using their personal information.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have improved on my communication skills and have learnt new skills such as bar work, I haven't worked on a bar before so I was not sure how I would do when first starting, the support and training was amazing and helped me feel confident in working behind the bar. I have definitely improved with all admin skills as I came in without any and now, I am comfortable and confident in most tasks given to me when it comes to the admin side. The company is amazing at encouraging people to improve themselves as well as progress within the company, my team and especially my managers have really helped me with my self-confidence and have helped me grow as a person.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love that it helps me go more into depth on what I am learning at work, it makes me think about what we are doing and understand the reasons behind what we do. I like the support and encouragement I get from Mary my Lifetime coach as well as at the meetings we go to each month with other people that are doing the apprenticeship.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I like that its all in one place and its very easy to understand and use. I am also re-doing my Maths and English and Lifetime helps me focus on the revision by adding them into my learning plan. I like the simplicity of the dashboard and knowing where you are in your plan and what you need to improve on as well as if you are running behind you know where you need to focus. It is also very easy to go to a previous task to see what you have learnt, what your answers were and if you would change or expand on them later in the year. It is also very helpful when it comes to revision as everything is in one place.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • From the very beginning of my employment with Premier inn BTC, I have received such amazing support from managers and other team members. Everyone is always happy to answer questions, take time away from their department and to teach you anything if you want to learn. I love being with a company where everyone is willing to help any department and jump on any job to help others. The atmosphere is amazing, everyone is always welcoming and in a positive mood, because of this it is a great place to work and encourages you to stay with the company. The support and encouragement I have received from the team and management has built up my confidence and made me want to progress within the company as well as improve on my skills and knowledge, which is why I am doing the apprenticeship and am determined to follow this one with the one after it as so on.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Mary is always available and if not straight away I know I can message her and will hear back within a couple of days. She has been a great help with my apprenticeship and is always there to support me. She knows that I want to continue onto the next apprenticeship after the one I am currently doing and has encouraged me and let me know the qualifications I will need and has helped me with planning on how to get them. When I have worried about a task, after speaking to Mary I have always felt reassured and more confident in being able to finish that task in time.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel more qualified in doing tasks that I wasn't previously confident in doing. It has definitely helped me to improve my communication skills, writing emails, body language and a lot more awareness of the reasons behind the things we do. It has made me think about what we do and how I can improve on it, or if it's something that has gone wrong it has made me think about what caused the mistake to happen and how to prevent it from happening again in the future.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • My first assignment with the apprenticeship was about how to do the banking from a charity fundraiser. After planning and doing a fundraiser, it has made me want to actively be involved in helping the charity our hotel supports to raise money. (Yes, I also learnt the banking 😁) I have taken over doing the fundraisers at our hotel, with the help and support from management and team members, it is definitely something I enjoy and am always amazed by the generosity of the staff, guests and other people that donate or take part in helping us raise money for our charity.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Whitbread to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because it has very flexible hours and there are a lot of different departments within the company, so it will be suitable for a variety of people, depending on what or where they want to work. The atmosphere at all the Premier inn's I have been to, as well as all staff I have met that work for Whitbread, has always been positive and welcoming. It is also very big on encouraging people to progress within the company.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Whitbread?
  • Be yourself and be honest. Remember everyone has been where you are, and we are all happy to help and want you to succeed. Tell the person interviewing you or even on your resume what you are looking for, if you are looking for full or part time work, if you are flexible. Let them know if you want to grow within the company, or if you want to take part in the apprenticeship.
