I am a trading apprentice underwriter within CE&RE at RSA, on a day-to-day basis I am required to assess and evaluate the risks of commercial businesses taking out insurance with us, renewals, MTAs and revised renewals. I also have my apprenticeship work and revision for my upcoming exams.
I have learnt lots of new skills within underwriting that were completely new to me prior to the apprenticeship starting, a lot of underwriting requires attention to detail, mathematic skills such as percentages and rates and a lot of evaluating and analysing.
I do really enjoy my apprenticeship programme, it has enabled me to learn lots of new things around insurance and to meet other apprentices within my company who I get on with.
My programme is very well organised as the person who looks after it- , she has all of us on a call each month to see how we are getting on and to support every one of us. If we need help, she is open to supporting us via a call, as well my DLS tutor is supportive and we catch up quite often to go over my progress etc.
My employer is very supportive, I always feel that I can go to people for help and there is a plan in place for me in terms of training with the Senior Technical Underwriter within my team and my Team Leader is always supporting and checking up on me.
I personally think that the support from my training provider could be a bit better in terms of communication with my Tutor, however they do set up meetings with us occasionally to go support us when we come to sit our exams and they have a "ask an expert" feature on their website for if we need support or to ask something which i think is a great idea.
I currently don't have a qualification within insurance.
There is a few extra-curricular activities I know about such as they have a voluntary programme to raise money for charities and they have a book club, however I think they could do a bit more around this
Yes
RSA really look after you as an apprentice and they want the best out of you to support the company in the future, they put a lot of hard work in for apprentices to support them. I think one of the best things about RSA is that they offer incentives for hard work and completing tasks, they have an amazing pension scheme and they offer flexibility around working from home and what hours you work throughout the day as long as you work your contracted hours.
Dedicate your time to applying for RSA, research the company thoroughly to show your interested in joining RSA and just show willingness throughout the recruitment stage. RSA look for people who are new to the insurance industry who they can train up through an apprenticeship and to get them qualifications.
