I'm a decision maker for Universal Credit with the DWP. I have to contact customers to gather information that I am missing from their claim. I then need to consult the guidance in order for me to be able to process their claim and make the correct decision for them.
I have learnt the process of making decisions based on the habitual residence test (HRT) and I have learned how to interpret the guidance along with the evidence to make the correct decisions. I have also learned how to conduct myself to positively reflect a good brand image to customers and other people I come into contact with.
I have only just started the apprenticeship. However, I am enjoying having the time out from work to be able to develop myself further, ensuring I am doing the best job possible. I also enjoy the fact it is research you have to go off and do yourself and find out the answers for yourself, I tend to remember information better that way.
The apprenticeship is well structured, and it goes at whatever pace you're comfortable with. Everything is explained to you so you know what exactly is expected of you and each research project co.ers one topic at a time. If you need more time to do a research project or you need more support, your TDO can accommodate you with that.
My team leader is ensuring I get all of the support I need. There are regular meetings with line managers to see how I am getting on with the apprenticeship and if I need anything further from them. I also have an on site SPOC for the apprenticeship stuff so if I have any questions at all I can ask them and they will try to find the answer for me.
I receive all the support I need. My TDO has explained everything that is expected of me and how to get a better grade. If I have any questions regarding the work or if I'm unsure of anything they will make the time for me. They also arrange the meetings around what works best for me and changes them according to my needs.
I have a vast experience of customer service from my background in retail. The apprenticeship is helping me translate that into a civil service role. It is also encouraging me to dig deeper into the policies and procedures and what effects my personal presentation and communication can have on the company. Researching it means it's more ingrained into me and it's always on my mind when interacting with customers.
There is a sports and social team which arranges days out periodically throughout the year - recently did a Christmas night out where tickets were subsidised. There is also a Curry Club which meets every couple of months. And they have also just introduced a causal weigh in for weight watchers.

The benefits for working here regarding the flexibility around your work schedule is amazing. I am used to working unsociable hours and I now have evenings free. I have no issue getting time off for doctors and dentists appointments. The staff at my place of work are also an amazing bunch of friendly, welcoming people who will always help you.
The application process is horrendous. Most of the time it's not about what examples you are using but how you phrase them. If you don't succeed at first you can get feedback on your applications. Definitely use this to improve. And don't be disheartened if you fail a few applications - I made so many applications before getting a job that was right for me. Don't be afraid to apply for jobs you may not necessarily want, just to get the experience for the application process.
