Flying Start Degree Programme - FS1, Newcastle Review

As a flying start student, we part take in the daily work with regards to the audit work in PwC. We complete evidence gathering activities per each client that was are engaged upon. This could also require some communication with the client directly or third parties which are involved with the clients to obtain required information

I have learned a never ending list of new skills on my placement. I have increased my knowledge of excel significantly whilst performing my work. I have also learned how to use PwC systems effectively. Furthermore, my communication skills have increased the most, with coaching provided on email writing skills and professional communication with clients.

I really enjoy my placement. We are given the opportunity to work with a variety of people throughout the months, of all levels, cultures and beliefs. I feel like although we are only on placement we are still treated as though we are a valued member of the team, this allows me to enjoy the course a lot more

The flying start degree programme is very well organised, it is very clear the order of our work and what we are expected to do. My personal favourite thing about the organisation is that the work placement and the university work and studies are kept entirely separate, so that we can focus on only one aspect

We receive lots of support from PwC in many ways. There are many ways to receive support online through several websites which are provided to us, for anything that we could possibly need. We are also provided a lot of in person support, through the provision of the buddies and career coaches

Our training provider with regards to Newcastle University, have remained in contact with us throughout the placement to ensure that we are getting on okay and not needing any additional support from them. We have also received lots of emails and support with our exams and studies from the ICAEW

My university studies have definitely helped me to perform my role at PwC. Specifically the modules surrounding audit and assurance and financial accounting has really fit into my role and allowed me to have an understanding of some areas of work straight from starting the placement, reducing the need for training on everything

At PwC we have had a lot of social activities throughout our few months. We have part taken in social activities outside of work, such as bowling and going for lunch to various restaurants. We also have ordered lunch into the office when a senior member of staff is in the office to allow for networking.

The course provided by PwC is a fantastic opportunity that I would recommend to anyone who is willing to work hard because the opportunity to achieve a degree and the ICAEW chartered accountancy qualification at the same time, is not provided by many other firms. This along with the work placements and the post uni job offer, makes the course a very good opportunity

In terms of tips, I would say to anyone thinking to do the flying start degree programme to be willing to work hard as it is a tough course, but the rewards are fantastic. The social aspects of the course are also great, I would also say be willing to socialise as the course is very small.
