I am currently in collage full time at the Oxford plant training collage. I am spending three days a week in the workshop learning basic practical skills such as electronics, hand fitting and machining. I spend one day a week doing my foundation degree in different engineering based subjects. The other day i spend doing any course work I need to complete.
I have learnt lots of new skills in the workshop. I have done lots of work in electrical and electronics. I have learnt hoe to wire circuits and perform calculations to ensure the circuits work correctly. I have also learnt different techniques and skills within hatting fitting, turning and milling. I had never done turning or milling before but I am now confident in using the machines.
I find the programme very enjoyable. I particularly enjoy the practical side of the course where I have produced several pieces of work that I am very proud of. For example I managed to create a five piece mallet on the turning lathes which I very found very rewarding to make.
I think the programme is pretty well organised. I think personally the layout of the week works particularly well as I spend some days doing practical work and other days doing course work and degree work. This helps to keep me interested in learning. The only lack of organisation is that some times I do not receive emails about particular topics which i should have been made aware of.
I receive a lot of support from my employer. In particular I receive a lot of support from my training manager who supports not only with my work but also outside of work making sure that I am settling in well as I had to move house for this apprenticeship.
I do receive a good amount of support from my training provider. I think the tutors are very approachable and are easy to get in contact with about any difficulty I am having with my degree work or course work. I also think that the use of Microsoft teams helps with support from them as they are easy to contact when not at the physical collage.
I am currently yet to start a placement in the workplace, my first placement will be in September of this year but I believe the current training I am receiving is applicable to what I will be doing in my future placements. This is because when we are learning skill we are giving examples of when we will use this in placements
There are lots of available extra curricular activities that I can get involved in. For example there are both Netball and Football social teams as well as a charity champions team that help to raise money for different charities each year. I attend the football social matches which I find are a good opportunity to socialise with colleges as well as to stay fit.
Yes
I would definetly recommend BMW Group to a friend as they are a very supportive company and my course in particular is very enjoyable. The placements they offer are very exciting and you are able to learn lots of new skills which would be extremely useful in future job roles.
If you are applying to BMW Group I would recommend researching the company before your interview as well as prepare answers for questions you would expect to be asked. I would also recommend you try and be as confident and open as possible in order to present yourself as honestly as you can.
