Some days I do theory work at Furness College and other days of the week I am located in the training school participating in hands-on learning which increases my experience. We do hands-on learning in the pipe workshop by making varied types of different pipe tasks to practice for our placements on site.
I have learnt a vast amount of new skill throughout my limited time with BAE so far and I have also gained a lot of new knowledge that I did not have before. It has been great learning new things and it was easy to learn as a complete novice. I highly recommend.
I definitely enjoy this programme. It has broadened my horizons and allowed me to gain specialist knowledge that I would not have been able to learn otherwise. It is a great opportunity if you fancy a career change and it is not particularly difficult. If you do struggle, everyone is happy to help.
Sometimes, it is not clear what our schedule is until before it happens, but this only happens when there is a change to the schedule. When there are no changes, it is pretty regular. The disorganisation of the schedule could be due to the increased number of intake of my trade so I would not judge it too harshly.
If we have any trouble you can go to anyone in charge of you and they will try their best to help you out with whatever you need. I have never had any problems sourcing and receiving support from people like my skills coach. You usually can gain support by a simple e-mail.
We get lots of support from our tutors when we are struggling with our college theory work. We can ask for any extra resources or extra help that we need. Whenever my class has asked for help with something, the tutors are always happy and willing to help us with whatever.
Because we learn about all the things we will do in the workshop in the classroom first we then feel more confident when performing the tasks that we learned in the classroom in the workshop. I think it does improve our confidence if we know how something works before we do it.
I am not sure if there are any extra curricular activities that I could be taking part in but to be honest I have not really explored it. I am sure there are certain activities you can do but I am not aware of any specific ones.
Yes
I think it is a great opportunity and definitely worth taking. It is great for complete beginners and people wanting a career change. It is also really good for people who have just left school as it has a great starting salary for a 16 year old.
It seems obvious but apply for something you think you will enjoy. Try and do any courses that BAE offer because that is how I got in, but also apply the traditional way. If you get through to the interview stage, make sure you know how you have used the BAE Behaviours.
