  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • In my role as an apprentice, I spend time in placements with different teams and move around every 6 months. In these teams, I am managing projects specific to the facility, actions within this role can include chasing up actions, issuing out actions, logging and tracking progress and monitoring future progress for comparison.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed a whole range of skills, such as stakeholder management and leadership. Within the role I do, these are two vital skills in order to get the job done within the time scale set out. In order to get the job done, decisions need to be made and people need to be informed of what they need to do in order for this decision to become reality, this is where these skills come in.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme I am on as it has given me an opportunity to see what i personally enjoy in the working world. I am also provided education as well as the chance to have on-the-job learning to broaden my expertise. These opportunities have allowed me to create new friendships too.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure has been completed by other apprentices before me and although constant changes are happening throughout, I feel the programme is structured well and I understand what is needed from me and what I have coming up in the future of the programme. There is always support if I am confused around anything specifically.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer provides support throughout my apprenticeship, reviews are held in order for me to talk and track my progress throughout my apprenticeship. Informative sessions are also held which have given me an insight of what I must do in order to complete my apprenticeship, packs are also sent out after these so we can continually look at the content.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider offers constant support either through emails or phone calls, sessions are also held in the week if we wish to ask any information around a certain topic and discuss our work. They also forward us online information sessions held by others which we can join and learn information around new topics.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I would say it does not affect my role personally. I feel like the content of the course does not carry over as my role is very specific. I understand certain parts will transfer over, but I feel the work we complete on-the-job is what helps us grow as professionals and the qualification learning just expands our knowledge on topics.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I have joined the council within my company for apprentices. Within this, we get involved in multiple activities within the business, which allows for a great networking opportunity. I have also completed stretch activities which have allowed me to work with a lot of different apprentices and grow my connections even more.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Bae provides a good platform for you to learn about yourself in the world of working. I have realised what skills I can excel in. Plus, I am able to enhance my working life and life outside of work now I know where my strengths are. I feel i have become more independent and am able to do things better myself since starting as it has given me the opportunity to grow.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Get involved. The first year I was not that fussed around getting involved in different tasks and opportunities. Then when my second year started, I signed up for more things and took my projects seriously. Since then, I have been offered more opportunities and been able to get my name out there. So I am asked to help and support on more interesting projects.
