  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a Cost Estimating Apprentice who completes a Project Management Degree as part of their programme. On a day-to-day i am learning to estimate how much materials will cost for the programmes at BAE. By using cost models I consider all areas of the estimate to ensure accuracy.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a variety of skills so far from my time at BAE. The main practical skill i have learnt is how to use Excel in more depth; I now understand how to use different functions within the programme. I have also developed my team working skills as I have worked very closely with my team.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • So far i have really enjoyed the programme. I love working with numbers while also having a degree to concentrate on; which is paid for. Although I would have loved to go to university, the thought of debt just put me off therefore the apprenticeship is a great way to do a degree while also starting in a work environment.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • At first there were a few delays with the programme. It took me a while to gain the relevant software to actually start my job, however, since starting there has been no other issues. The flexibility between work and university is brilliant and my managers so far have provided me with any extra time I have needed with my university work.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have received great support from my employer. I am dyslexic and have been provided with 25% extra time at university and this is also taken into consideration in my placements. My manages have been supportive and have sorted any problems which I have faced. I do not think BAE could have been more helpful.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Again, I am provided with extra time towards assignments at university. I was also offered further help if i would have found it helpful. They are extremely understanding about my needs and have people I can phone or get further support from if needed. I do not require more assistance at the moment, however i know it is there.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As I am a Cost Estimator and do a Project Management apprenticeship, sometimes it is hard to link the degree into my everyday job. Although, there are some aspects which have helped me understand how a business works. In the future, I will also have placements in Project Management in order to complete my apprenticeship, but so far the knowledge from the degree has stood me in a good position for my placements.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, absolutely!! I have been and am part of a large amount of stretch activities which allow me to get out and about. I have been on stretch to local schools to help the interest of STEM and taken part in a range of open days and evenings to educate younger students about the benefits of an apprenticeship. This is a chance to improve your communication skills and meet a variety of different people.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • BAE is a great employee with huge opportunity to develop your career. The apprenticeships offer further education which is paid for and you get paid to complete it. The teams are inclusive and they care about the work you complete to ensure you fulfil the apprenticeship standards. I would absolutely recommend BAE.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Make sure you know a bit about the company and what they stand for. However, the most important thing to show is confidence and enthusiasm. Show the employer you want to work hard and have prospects for the future. Show them why YOU are the right person for this job.
