I am trained in several different departments. My job role can involve receiving deliveries in from the receive dock. Stowing the items on the shelves, picking the items for customer orders, packing customer orders, also dealing with problem solving within the customer returns and stow department, and driving the PPT.
I was previously only training on the customer returns / damages area doing the process and working on problem solving. Since starting the apprenticeship, this has given me the opportunity to rotate on most of the departments within the warehouse widening my skills. I now drive the PPT, can stow, pick and pack.
I have really enjoyed doing the programme, especially the improvement projects, working within my team to implement new ideas and improvements and it has been great gaining the feedback from the managers and other associates on how these improvements have helped within the area. I have also thoroughly enjoyed the classroom days and extra knowledge given from our tutor.
The programme is really well organised. With the online system, it is really clear to see what work is due and easy to upload all the documents. Also, it is great to have a 12 week review so you can give any feedback on concerns and things that are going well. The classrooms have really helped.
It has been difficult at times requesting help from certain managers. Some of the managers and HR/ safety and hazmat team are extremely helpful. However, other departments which you need to require help and authorisation from for projects make it difficult.
The training provider/ our tutor offer a lot of support. Very easy to access the apprentice dashboard online to view all the work, very easy to contact our tutor who is also very quick to respond with help when needed. I haven’t had to do the functional maths and english but I know others who have have also received a great deal of support from the training provider.
The qualification through the training provider that I have received has given me a much better understanding of the requirements within the job role I currently work within. Also having to complete the improvement projects with my course has also helped me to identify more issues and put them forward to management for improvement ideas.
We have many additional extra curricular activities to get involved within my workplace. We have the different affinity groups, one of them being glamazon (LGBTQ) which regularly do social meet ups, we celebrate pride week with various activities, competitions and decorations throughout the warehouse, also with the attendance of Birmingham pride. There are also various charity walks, community clean ups.
Yes
Despite there sometimes being some negative impact on working under poor management, Amazon is a good place to work always with good opportunities to progress. the opportunities with apprenticeships gives you better advantage. There are different activities on each month to give the associates opportunity to get involved in affinity groups, charity events and local community projects.
I would tell others applying to Amazon to ensure they are themselves, strive to be the best, have a backbone and not to be afraid to disagree with management and put your suggestions across.
