I am a first year apprentice at BAE systems and I’m a mechanical machinist I machine parts together on a variety of machines which include cnc lathes and mills, milling machine, lathe. As I’m in college on a day to day basis I do a mix of class work and workshop based jobs.
I have learnt many new skills whilst doing this trade as being a machinist is very new to me I didn’t have alot of experience being on the machines so I have learned how to take back a diameter and how to skim a piece of metal I also have developed on my listening skills too.
I have enjoyed pay program slot since I have started back in September. I have learnt many skills and gain lots of knowledge in this programme. I have also gained many friends whilst being on this programme which is a really good thing. I am excited to learn more and gain lots more skills as this programme goes on.
The programme I am in is structured well as we are in college for the first months they we transfer into SASK then eventually we get put on placement. It is well structured as we know where we are going at what point. We also have lots of work to do in classrooms and also workshops.
We revive support from our employer by having someone to go to if we have any needs to problems. A person from our employee is based in college and we go to here whenever we need her. We also have lots of mentors in college too and we can go to them as well.
We revive a substantial amount of support from pot training provided when we are doing out qualification.
It’s has helped me perform better as I have learnt many skills and knowledge.
