at my apprenticeship currently there are different types of days I might have. if we are doing practical then this could be in the workshop doing maintenances tasks on diesel engines or building hydraulic systems. we also have a lot of coursework and other written work to do so when we are doing this we are in a classroom doing this.
yes, in terms of mechanical knowledge my skills and knowledge are far more superior now than what they were before starting my apprenticeship. there are certain tasks to do with mechanical maintenance which I now feel happy completing unsupervised and I also feel like my knowledge of tools is greater and I know how to use tools I wouldn't have previously know how to.
I am really enjoying the program I am on and we are looking to go out onto work placements in the near future, the practical side of the apprenticeship is really enjoyable as it is a great opportunity to get hands on and try new things and develop my skills.
at the beginning of my apprenticeship I felt that the organisation or structure of the program could have been better as there was a few delays with getting people uniforms, laptops, overalls and other bits. I feel later on now that the instructors have more freedom with what they want us to do that there is a good amount of structure.
BAE is a very supportive employer and the staff ( instructors, HR staff, managers) are all very supportive and you feel like you can go to them with any issue or concern and they will take on board what you say and help you to resolve any issues. fortunately the company has the facilities as well. luckily for me I haven't had any major issues so I cant comment from first hand experience by learning about my peers issues I know that they company have supported them well.
I receive a lot of support from our instructors towards working towards our qualification as the instructors will set us work to do towards the qualification. they also make sure that the work we are completing we actually understand and aren't just copying form he internet and submitting it.
the qualification I am doing is a level 3 mechanical fitter and the job role is mechanical fitter apprentice, therefore the qualification is essential for my role. the qualification will show that I am competent in safely carrying out mechanical tasks correctly. so for this reason I feel like the qualification is very important to me.
there are constant emails regarding activities outside of work hours, for example there is a weekly social event at broad oak and there was also one at scarlet tap. also a few people from the company that organised a beach clean up down Southsea beach were they collected litter, I however did not attend any of the social events.
Yes
it is a good company which offers excellent training providers and facilities. as well as this you will receive a very good salary as an apprentice and they will also provide you with a tool box sufficient for the work you will be intended to carry out . it is very good.
the advice i would give to others who are applying to BAE systems would be do your research on the company before your interview and make sure you have a project to talk about in the interview. if you are successful in the interview and get a job at BAE systems. show enthusiasm and always make sure you ask questions. it is better to be the one who asks lots of questions rather than the one who seems like they don't even wanna be there
