I work on board the navy ships on mechanical systems such as Diesel engines, Gas turbines and Pumps. I will remove and install valves and the surrounding pipework as well as potential propeller shaft work. This work will be completed during upkeep periods or times when there has been a fault.
I have learnt practical hand skills such as hand filing and fine tolerance work. I have learnt about the ships systems, layout and operation as well as company safety procedures. I have improved my teamworking and communication skills as well as resilience and patience when struggling with a task. I have learnt about the function of diesel engines and gas turbine systems.
I really enjoy my programme as I have the opportunity to work with likeminded people who will support me and enable me to improve. The work can be challenging due to obstacles like communication or organisation but most of the time my team will pull together to get it finished.
I believe that the programme has some good material such as engine maintenance units and material science, however I found that the schedule for the programme was confusing and I never knew if I needed to be in the classroom or be out in the business. sometimes the confirmation came with little notice.
Whilst at work, I will be supported to go to the training centre as well as being booked on courses such as working at height or confined spaces. I have regular reviews about my performance as well as what my future goals and aspirations will be moving forward with the company.
I receive a lot of support from the skills development centre in order for me to complete the apprenticeship. They will instruct and guide me on the courses I need to complete as well as help with the paperwork when organising competence folders and end point assessment work for the apprenticeship.
I feel that the qualification has given me a good mechanical understanding of engines as well as materials and general engineering maths and science. Whilst learning on the job, I have learnt vital practical skills and other skills like how to fit a valve or install a pipe to a system.
There is usually a pay-day social event that is organised as well as an occasional end of project social event. Other holidays like Christmas are not funded for socials. I did take part in a charity tough mudder event organised within the company where we raised money for Veteran Aid.
Yes
I believe that BAE systems is a good company to work for as there are many growth and development opportunities within the company. The benefits like the shares and pensions are also a positive as well as a shares and cash bonus. BAE is a large company with lots of options.
I would say to others who are thinking of applying to give it a go. It appears that the company is trying to grow due to the increased demand for apprentices and different trade apprenticeship options. I would also say that when applying, do not get down if you make a mistake, it is more about what you take from it and learn to move forward.
