  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As I am in my first year of the apprenticeship I have yet to undergo my role in the company. We attend James Watt college 5 days a week for the first year. Overall the college is good however has poor management and there is confusion about timetables as well as the tutors being rather rude and unprofessional.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes I have learnt how to mill, how to use basic tools such as files, hand fitting reamers and tappers as well as drills and hand saws. I have also learnt how to program PLCs which is interesting. We haven't had the best teachers however we have helped each other learn the basic ropes of programming. We have also learnt how to create pneumatic and hydraulic systems.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Its allright. The skills that i have picked up have been very interesting however the tutors havent made it the most enjoyable experience however I didnt really expect much from a bmet college. I have however understood everything so far with relative ease which does make it more interesting and more enjoyable.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Pretty unorganized. It seems that the managers or planners have not at all really planned out the year. Instead it has been very much fit in everything as we go. For example, once we finished one module the next week would comprise of us doing nothing on that particular day while the planners organise our next module, making sure the teacher was free and there was classroom where we could go to, so overall pretty unorganised.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Employer wise, BMW , i have recieved more than enough support. Whenever I have asked for help or if i have a problem my manager usually helps me sort it and he alwyas make sure that evry apprentice is well looked after and that everyone is coping with the work load and everyone is feeling good with work.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Very little. To be completely transparent, the training provider probably provides negative support as they make the qualifications more complicated than it has to be. Most tutors apart from a rare few do not help at all during their classes, especially classes in the workshop, the tutors do not help whatsoever, instead while we are working the tutors just sit at their desk on their laptops paying no attention to what we are doing and if by chance anyone makes mistaked they will be shouted at for doing it wrong even though ironically do not help to make sure you understand in the first place. Very dissapointed in this,

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • To be honest because I haven't really started my role at BMW so I cannot really say how my qualifications help me perform better in my role. Although the days I have spent a few days at plant show me that most of the roles I will be involved in will be maintaining systems so Hydraulics and Pneumatics is quite useful.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Not that I know of at the moment, however I have seen a Gym at work as well as a bicycling event in the past which does show that the business cares about the mental wellbeing of their employees. Actually in the next two months there is a day at plant where you can bring family to show them around plant as well as play games.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BMW Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It's an amazing company where I believe that employees are well valued. I also believe that the work here is not a chore or seen as a job but something that is interesting and the people ive spoken to have all said that they enjoy working here and the projects that are being carried out are amazing to get involved in.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group?
  • I would say, have a passion for the automotive industry. If you love playing with things, creating things, seeing how things work and if you want to have fun in a job then definately apply. I would say if you are tring to get in then be enthuiastic, show your eagerness and have a genuine interest in the company.
