  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a shift running floor manager. This means that I run shifts and look after the store when my business manager is not at work. We also help set targets for crew in order to make shifts better as we all have a common goal and something to work towards.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I would say that I have worked loads on my leadership skills. I’ve had to put our friendship aside and run kitchens and get people to also do things that they might not want to do, but I’ve also had to learn that sometimes people are going to struggle so I need to be able to help them.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoyed it. I loved getting to know my mentor and just learning about different things with the hospitality industry. I found it really interesting how something that seems so simple can actually have so many complex ideas about it and it was was interesting to learn.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is really well organised however, the only thing I would change are the mentors.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive loads of support from my business manager. She always made sure that I was given time to complete my apprenticeship work and that if I did need any help, I could get support. When I needed to submit my business project, I asked for some guidance, and she told me how I could improve it.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I received loads of support. They always made sure that I could use examples from the shop floor to make sure that I actually understood what we were talking about, otherwise I got a bit confused. They also told me where I could find helpful information for case study work.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I personally don’t think it has helped me, but that’s because in the amount of time it has taken me to do the apprenticeship, I’ve had two promotions that were not as a result of doing the apprenticeship. But it has helped me understand other roles in hospitality.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, we often play football and do a charity run at some point in the year. We also have loads of charity fundraisers at work that we can all take part in like wearing Easter bunny ears or taking part in a colouring competition.

  • 9a. Would you recommend McDonald's to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • McDonald’s as a job is good. You get to work with many young people and have a laugh whilst you do it. Even if you think it’s not fun they will make working there fun for you. It just takes some time to get to know new people.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to McDonald's?
  • If you don’t understand something like the procedures, ask someone and they will help you. There are so many so it makes sense. They’d rather you ask than just stand there and not have a clue what is going on. Also try to talk to as many people as you can.
