I am currently on rotations around different places within the company, more specifically I am working with the systems integration team to inspect, analyse, and diagnose problems with upcoming models. This often involves the use of CAD, as well as physical inspection and testing to ensure rectified parts meet the specification.
So far during my apprenticeship, I have developed many key skills including CAD, programming, electrical theory and networking. As a controls engineering apprentice, I have seen the importance of CAD and programming. From basic line drawings to complex 3D models, CAD has important applications in the design processes. Programming has evolved from simple code snippets to powerful algorithms, enabling automation and optimisation. The advancements in these fields have transformed industries and opened up endless possibilities for innovation.
As an apprentice at BMW, I am excited to come to work most days, learning from experienced professionals in a dynamic and innovative environment. From working on cutting-edge automotive technologies to collaborating with skilled mentors, I am always learning something different or a new way to carry out a process.
My apprenticeship has the potential to be an excellent learning experience with a well-structured programme at BMW. I am receiving comprehensive training, engaging hands-on learning, and working with supportive mentors who are invested in the work I do. The course can sometimes be let down by the training provider, who does not always have the correct facilities and information to aid me on the theoretical side of things. University days are carried out by my tutor, who is behind me fully, as BCU and BMet often do not seem to have a clear structure.
The people at BMW Group are always supportive if I ever need help. They always take the time to share their knowledge, provide guidance, and offer constructive feedback if there is something I need help to understand. Overall, I feel that I get enough support from my employer if I need it.
The support I receive from BCU and BMet is mixed. My tutor provides guidance, encouragement, and valuable insights that have helped my academic work. His dedication and expertise to teaching make my learning both interesting as well as insightful. However, apart from that, I do not feel I get much support from the university or college in any way, and so I feel it lets the apprenticeship down. The only reason this gets a 4 star is because of my tutor, otherwise it is a 2.
By doing a degree alongside work has been a big achievement for me. I have gained invaluable practical experience while applying theoretical concepts in real-world scenarios. Balancing work and studies has greatly improved my time management and multitasking skills, and sometimes I am able to directly apply what I learn in my job.
Doing extra-curricular activities at work can be challenging, balancing work responsibilities with additional commitments demands careful time management. However, the opportunity to expand my skills, network, and contribute to the workplace culture presents itself in the charity team as well as the apprentice sharepoint team. Apart from that, there are not many extra curricular activities offered as far as I am aware of..
Yes
My apprenticeship at BMW group offers a lot in comparison to other options. I am gaining practical, hands-on training from industry experts, while also earning money, offering a financial advantage over full-time university students. The opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology, learn from skilled professionals, and be part of a global automotive brand is invaluable for my career growth. As someone who would like to work in motorsports, having BMW on the CV is a great thing to have.
For anyone applying for an apprenticeship at BMW, my advice is to be proactive, demonstrate your passion for the automotive industry, and highlight your relevant skills and experiences. Networking within BMW is important, building relationships with colleagues and mentors can lead to new opportunities, career advice, and exposure to different parts of the business. Also, try to take on as many different opportunities as possible.
