  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an engineer one of my common roles is to perform steel reinforcement checks, which involves making sure the task has been done to the drawing specification. Another task is collecting and logging data from the engineering works on-site, for example the ground works progress. Some other tasks I do in a construction manager role are site diaries and leading Daily Activity Briefing meetings to the subcontractors.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed on an enormous amount of skills from being more productive and efficient on Microsoft Office apps to communication and people management. All of the skills I have developed are vital for my role. Some new skills I have learned are how to think of ideas to introduce sustainability into the construction industry and furthering that, how I can implement them now.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love my job. Every day is different on a construction site; you spend so much time adapting to new situations and completing the tasks that lead to a physical structure being built. I have a brilliant balance of learning the technical information at university and using it practically on-site.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprenticeship scheme is very organised at Mace. I have a specific day, once a week, to go to university, which doesn't change for an entire academic year. Also, every six weeks apprentices have internal sessions where we receive training from other Mace employees or external sources. All of the learning tracking is done on a portfolio template, which makes it very easy to follow and write the necessary information.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive ample support from multiple sources at Mace. I have my line manager, who has the same job role and educational background as I do, so they are extremely helpful. I have my project team who were very welcoming. I have the Emerging Talent Team at Mace who can help me with apprenticeship specific questions. In addition to all of this, I have my apprentice cohort and my "buddy" who are all at similar ages and positions in their careers who are always willing to help.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have eight hours of contact time a week, during term time. Outside of this you are able to contact them and will get a reply within a reasonable amount of time. There are also a lot of online resources the university provides which is very useful when working in your own time.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification helps me massively because I am able to understand the technical conversations and drawing analysis of others that will eventually need checking on-site by someone who understands the drawing. If I didn't have the qualification, I wouldn't be able to go as far in my career as someone who did.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Mace offer a lot of social groups for specific people to help them notice their value at the company. There are project team and business unit social events at different times throughout the year. Furthermore, if there are no specific activities arranged, lots of people at work will meet each other just to socialize outside of work.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Mace to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Since I joined Mace, I have been thrown so many opportunities to learn and experience new things. Each of them, I have thoroughly enjoyed and made very fond memories. This is can be through a training session or volunteering at a local community. Employees at Mace all have the same goal which is driven through the senior leadership team of company.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mace?
  • Mace's website displays all of the key behaviors and cultures implemented in the company, which is not a facade. My best advice would be to understand what "redefining the boundaries of ambition" means and how you can be a part of that at Mace, and the same for the rest of Mace's behaviors and cultures.
