  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Metal fabrication jobs, tack welding, and faring up to align the jobs to meet tolerance of job specifications. Read drawings and be able to interperet them and put them into practice and create the componant required for the final job. We level all the blocks and tack them together in the different areas in the yard.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned how to tack weld in relation to lining up and assembling components within the job. I have also learned how to read drawings in relation to the different components needing assembling. I have also learned how to burn and plasma cut and have enjoyed it a lot and will use this in my career.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my programme so far, all the skills that we have learned have been taught in a very interesting way which makes it more fun to learn. The trainers are all very nice to work with and are very helpful if I have any questions that need answering.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is very well structured when it comes to the education side. The course is well structured in the way that all the courses link together and can assist with each other, but they should sometimes be in a different order to coincide with each other better and be more helpful within the education years.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We receive lots of support from the college that we are placed in and have access to different emails and phone numbers to access different levels of support for various different reasons. All of the skills coaches are present in the college regularly for questions that arise throughout the course.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I am still working towards my qualification and I have received plenty support from various different departments and various different people. Whenever I have had an issue, it has been very easy to speak to the people that I need to speak to. This support will continue as I will be allocated to a specific training coach next year.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I do not have my qualification yet, but everything I have learned so far has helped me advance very well within the part-time role in the business. The continued learning throughout will help me within my career and will help me constantly grow and advance my career within the business.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is not a lot for first year apprentices, but any experiences that become available are always sent to us.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a great workplace that is very interesting, a place that has the potential to be a lifetime job - one which has the opportunities to continually develop skills and relationships with people and colleagues. It is a very welcoming workplace that is very accommodating to individuals and is very fun.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Enjoy everything and make sure that you get the most of all the opportunities that are available to you throughout your apprenticeship. Make sure to listen and take on all the information given so you make the most of everything.
