My current role involves liaising with our various clients in a post sales capacity to help them learn to utilise our products in the most efficient way / use the products that they have bought but not started using yet. I also complete lots of additional online training as my role is fairly technical.
During the first year of my apprenticeship, I have been able to learn many new skills / develop the skillset I began to develop at Sixth Form. The majority of my on the job training has been in two categories: hard skills e.g. product details and soft skill training e.g. confident presenting.
Overall, I really enjoy my programme as it has allowed me to make many new friends with similar interests. This apprenticeship has also provided me with ample opportunities to continue to grow my knowledge, for example through the training provided by the university or by other training courses at work.
The company side of the programme is very well organised where I receive lots of support from my colleagues in my company. The university has arranged contact with each apprentice once every three months. There are also one hour seminars once every three weeks and you can contact lecturers via email.
The company side of the programme is very well organised where I receive lots of support from my colleagues. In the first few months of my programme I have been able to benefit from having three different mentors from different areas of the business as well as frequent contact from both my managers.
I would say that my uni is less involved than my employer as aside from the 3 monthly check ins the learning is very self-paced. However if a student does require support they are able to reach out to the course lead and ask questions that they have / request a help session.
At the moment I am still in an earlier stage of my apprenticeship so I am still reviewing some of the more basic skills of my degree specifications. However, some of the more specific concepts relating to databases for example have aided my understanding of some workplace training exercises I have done.
There are many extra curricular activities that are available to the apprentices, we have a central place where this information can be found and shared. Many of these activities are based near to our offices so they are easily accessible for most of the cohort. The activities are very varied so there is something for everyone.
Yes
Overall, I would say that the employer has been very supportive over my first year in the company, the range of roles that you can have as an apprentice is massively varied so there is a role for every skill level and interest. I have also had the opportunity to extend my network.
There is no one specific IBMer so the best way is to just be yourself when going through the interviewing process. However I would say that some general characteristics you should see in yourself is to be growth minded and open to new experiences and to not be afraid to show your passion for tech.
