  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role includes me learning as much as I can about each placement while also trying to add value to working there. The goal in each placement is to take away as much as you can while leaving something of value to the teams. I can adapt my work to what suits me best. At the moment, I am creating training pacts to do with the training I received.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I have learnt communication skills through interacting with many new people frequently, I have improved my office skills through learning perfectionist behaviours like emails writing and conducting meetings. I have learnt about project management and I have learnt about software engineering and maintenance, as well as information assurance and league standers. As well as my course in electrical and electronic design engineering.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • So far it has been great. When I have issues they are quick to be resolved. There is always the interest of the employees at mind. Their main goal is to give you what you need to grow and be the best employee you can. The only downfall is the confusion on what apprentices should be doing in some places, but it does get quickly resolved if asked.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is difficult to apply what we learn as the office job feels unrelated. We study electronic design yet we work on systems where we do not apply our design skills meaning our course becomes irrelevant in the workplace. They do try and relate the course and the placements as much as possible however this is sometimes not possible.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • If we have any issues, they are resolved quickly. The employer keeps the view that they are here to support us not the other way round. Any issue we have they take seriously and work to resolve in the shortest time possible. I know if I have an issue it will be fixed.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • In previous years, I would have rated this a 9 and said it was great, however in the last year we have reached out for help to a teacher who did not teach and the solution has progressed extremely slowly. We have had a total of 3 teachers in the last 6 months and only 3 lessons involving teaching. The collage is trying extremely hard, but is having issues finding an employee that will support our learning.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Our qualification is not very transferable into the workplace. It does allow us to understand the machinery and what we are working with but that does not affect our ability to complete our roles. Our placements are not very technical due to the technical side being in software engineering when we are electrical engineers.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We have many social events and networking events. Not only socialising in work via networking events with all early careers and many executives in the bushiness, but also outside of the office going to paint-balling, pubs, London, badminton, football. We are always looking for more activities and ask for suggestions. Sports socials are usually every week and other socials occur on an average of 1.5 months, however we are trying to increase that to 1 or 2 a month.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I feel this company want the best for its apprentices. I have seen how other businesses treat their employees and BAE is quite good in comparison. It has many roles and they want to see you happy and thriving and therefore encourage movements around the business. I genuinely believe this is a company that will help you grow in whatever suits you.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Look into the area of the business you are applying to and find an area you want to learn more about. This will help you know what you want to do, as there are so many options. But keep in mind you will move around to learn about all areas of the business. Also know that this is a welcoming environment. As a female in a predominantly male environment it can be uncomfortable. It would be a lie to say I have not experienced any sexist remarks or singular people with obscure views, but what I can say is the business has a zero tolerance rule, we have a large network of support not just for women but anyone in need, whether it is mental health, representation, or anything that may concern you. This business will support you with any issues you may have.
