  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Solving engineering problems, communicating with members of the team. Getting a taste of various departments in the business by completing a variety of 3/6 month placements. Attending college full time in the first year and day release for years 2 and 3. Completing SVQ3 qualification in the workplace via logs and knowledge questions.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my communication, problem solving, time management, efficiency and adaptability within each placement as I have had different problems and tasks that I have needed to complete. My communication skills have greatly increased as in each placement I meet new people and need to communicate in order to fully understand what each team does.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my apprenticeship so far as I have had lots of opportunities to expand my knowledge and learn new things in a major business that is at the forefront of innovation in the shipbuilding industry. The level of detail I can get into on a daily basis is really enjoyable and engaging.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure of my apprenticeship was very clear from the get-go and I was aware of how I was going to be learning throughout the 4 years I would be an apprentice and even beyond that. If I have any problems regarding my apprenticeship, I know exactly who I can speak to and they are always more than happy to accommodate.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • i receive a lot of support from my employer and I am always encouraged to do my best and be engaged with the work I am undertaking. This comes from my development coaches and also from within my placement. All of the team members and my line manager encourage me to develop constantly.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • In terms of my college qualifications, I get lots of support from the business as they are involved in what courses and classes I do and are keen to know how I am getting on in college and if i have any worries or queries then the business is always keen to relay these back to college so we can have a better learning environment.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I have definitely used the knowledge and skills I gained in college in my first year when I came into the business on my first few placements. Also the SVQ3 qualification I am working towards definitely encourages me to seek out good quality and fulfilling jobs that I can then write about in my logbooks.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are extra curricular activities I can get involved in such as lunch and learns where you can sit and eat your lunch while learning and discussing topics like religion and diversity. This is a great way to broaden your insight of the world and better connect with people around the workplace.

  • Yes

  • it is an exciting and innovative place to work that is always pushing you to get the best out of you and encourage your development. The business is always striving for better and really cares about its employees and how they can push themselves and try something new and exciting.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • As much as the business will push you to get the best out of you, it is ultimately down to you as the employee to get the most out of your time and really put yourself out there. There are always opportunities if you wish to develop your skills and understanding.
