In the engineering technician programme, we are trained over a 4 year period. We are assigned into 4 different sectors. My sector being outfitting, we focus on the layout of the compartments on the ship. Day to day jobs consists of CAD activities in the model and making sure required updates are made in the model and drawings as well as dealing with updating a storing information. Also, following the designated design rules we have ship compartment reviews to evaluate if everything is complying accordingly.
I have further developed a lot of skills including my technical skills with computers in CAD softwares as well as Excel and AutoCAD. I have also improved my communications skills as team work is vital in BAE.
I enjoy my apprenticeship programme as I get a variety of tasks. I have been on a 12 week placement and I have gotten to meet a lot of great, helpful people. I have also met some new friends through the apprenticeship and it makes the job even better.
The programme is well structured. Over the 4 years I have been there, we have had a valid plan in place that gets me my qualifications in SVQ and City and Guilds as well as giving me experience within the company.
Support is on hand whenever you want it from the employer. The company has regular meetings on safeguarding as well as 12 week reviews in every placement for check ins and if you want to raise any concerns.
Any problems within the training aspect to help reach SVQ qualifications are handy as there have been some problems and mix ups from the colleges end. We can easily notify the company if any issues are occurring and they can help out and make changes with the college in order for us to stay on track to completing and achieving the qualifications.
Doing log books I feel helps progression in the job as it allows you to gain experience as well as logging the job you completed.
There are many opportunities at work such as social activities as they do many open days to promote the apprenticeship.
Yes
I would recommend BAE to a friend as it is a career that can go anywhere and has limitless progression and opportunities.
When applying, sell yourself and be yourself and prove to the company why you fit in the role you are applying for as it is a very competitive industry and job to get into. This is due to the thousands of applicants like you all wanting the same job.
