Day to day, I answer phone calls and I respond to tickets that are emailed in from internal employees on our construction sites. Their IT problems can range from needing connection to a printer or plotter, to needing a firmware update on their laptop. We also get many people dropping into HO, usually asking for IT equipment such as mice, headphones and laptop chargers.
Everything I have learnt I have learnt at Winvic. I have had the opportunity to hone my social skills, by talking to people both over the phone and in person. Prior to Winvic, I had no real IT job experience, and I have learnt lots from my colleagues in terms of what to do when certain things break and how to fix them.
I enjoy my programme very much. A lot of what I learn I get to use in my day-to-day job, and it helps me understand what some of the more senior IT colleagues get on with, such as the Infrastructure side of IT which I would not normally interact with as I work on the help desk.
Personally, the programme has not been very well organised. With both my skills coach and trainer leaving at the same time, it took a long time to get a replacement in which hindered my learning. Furthermore, it feels like I am not getting the same amount of help because of this, as my new skills coach has no prior experience doing this BCS IT Technician Solutions course in this capacity.
I receive an incredible amount of support from my employer. Whenever I need extra time to focus on my studies I get granted the time, and there are a lot of tasks that I have been allowed to do alongside supervision. These tasks have been set up on a HyperV server, which was incredibly interesting.
As mentioned previously, with losing both my trainer and skills coach at the same time, this did remove the support. They tried to be as transparent as possible when it came to replacing them, but I felt like I got mixed messages. However, so far my new skills coach has been as much of a help as possible.
Honestly, not much. With the course being fully virtual, I feel it is harder to ask questions to your trainer as they are not in front of you, also not being able to communicate with fellow students made it a lot harder for me. It was very daunting. I am also a visual learner, and a lot of the time the trainer went too fast for me to understand.
At work, at the end of every month, the office brings in a caterer to give us Jacket Potatoes with a range of hot and cold toppings. This is a nice social gathering of those in the office and it means I communicate with people I do not normally talk to.

Winvic is like a big family. I have been supported every step of the way in my apprenticeship and have had opportunities to do things like go to site, and do Q and A vlogs with marketing etc. Winvic also care heavily about mental health, which is a very important thing to me.
Be confident and outgoing - everyone is a friendly face and will happily help if they can. If you want to develop both social skills and work skills by working in the construction sector, I would always recommend Winvic, they are welcoming and there is always something happening across the business.
