I am the Receiving Supervisor and I look after day to day operations on Inbound Receiving and VAS operations. I am responsible for a team of around 15 people including a Team Leader. We make sure all loads are unloaded and presented and put away in a timely manner whilst aiming and monitoring key KPIs.
I have learnt about multiple management techniques and tools that I can utilise in my daily work routine including self awareness, building relationships and managing people. Another unit we learnt was Operational Management in which I have also had first hand experience due to being given an opportunity to do a stretch role as an Operations Manager for the last 6 months.
I have enjoyed my experience on the apprenticeship very much, it has boosted my skill set as a Supervisor by adding more strings to my bow. I have been surprised by the level of knowledge provided to me during the delivery of each unit, a lot of which was new to me, even with the experience I have from my time in leadership positions.
The programme is very well organised with each unit delivered at the start of the month. The target is to complete all tasks before delivery of the next unit which is a good target to have as it keeps you on top of your work and up to date.
It was agreed that we would be given 20% off the job time which although I have not always used, I have never had an issue taking time to do some coursework when I plan the appropriate cover. My line manager has always been 100% supportive of any support I have required.
All the support I need is given. My tutor is always only a phone call away and the other team members at ESP I have dealt with have always been extremely helpful. My tutor has helped me whenever I have got stuck with an assignment or subject. He knows my learning style and adapts his teaching to suit my needs.
I have been able to apply the skills I have learnt on the apprenticeship as soon as they were taught to me. In particular, time management skills have helped me a lot to manage my ever changing work load by utilising the tools we were shown in my day to day work.
There are often health and wellbeing related activities that we can get involved in. These are usually team related activities with competitions and prizes to be won. Last year there was a step / km challenge and prizes included Fitbit watches. There was also a dragon boat race event with a Wayfair team set up to compete last year.
