My role at ARUP so far has involved involvement across a wide variety of projects. As a technician I find myself handling a lot of of the CAD that is needed for the projects such as vehicle tracking, detail design and street design. Due to the work based learning of my degree, I am required to gain experience across topics such as construction technology, surveying and cost control principles all of which I have found relatable experience for ARUP.
I have developed my skill set in many new ways. From Excel data handling to CAD, I feel like my ability in the past year has grown immensely. People skills also.
I enjoy my programme greatly. My colleagues at work always lend a hand and are happy to answer any questions I have and of course they do this in the most pleasant way. Along with my work, the experience I have had with the university also reaffirms this.
At Arup, there has been a system in place from day one of joining to ensure that I know what is going on. I believe it has been very well designed and the structure of the workload in the office reflects this too.
My employer has always made it known that any question is not a silly one. If the person I ask is not sure, there is always someone to direct to that knows the answer and it is important to them that this is found. I also have a mentor that is great.
Heriot Watt University has been good at providing support when needed. All the points of contact I have made have been friendly and willing to help.
Gaining a Civil Engineering degree will help me grow within the company. It will help grasp new concepts as time goes on and open new opportunities to progress.
Yes, we have an amazing sports and social team. The team has been dedicated to organising multiple events such as bowling, karting, curling, painting, all of which have been a huge hit. My team also enjoys making plans for similar activities.
Yes
I would recommended it to a friend because so far I have had nothing but a positive experience with the company and they have helped me grow in technical aspects and also general skills.
Make sure that you understand the company values and that you have engaged with these. Online applications should be to a high level and when meeting others, make sure to be yourself with a level of professionalism.
