I am an ICP-MS Analyst in the metals and mineral analysis industry. I analyse various samples with the ICP-MS instrument alongside calibration and validation standards (to check accuracy) and using our LIMS system convert these values to a very exact ppm level. This in turn will tell our clients the content of their sample.
I’ve developed my ability to organise and manage my time as analysing samples in order of due dates, sample types and analysis methods is essential to the role. I’ve also learnt a lot of theory behind the use of an ICP-MS instrument as well as ICP-OES and Flame AAS instrumentation.
I really enjoy my programme as it allows me to balance education with a career whilst earning a great salary with no student debt. This will help me progress in my career as I will have extra years of experience compared to other people of my age. I really enjoy my role and find it extremely interesting.
Fairly well organised. The exam dates and release of content is regular and we are updated regularly about any changes to our set timetable for webinars, assignment due dates etc. It can however feel like there is too much content at some times which can be overwhelming and they could improve my course by spreading it out over a longer period of time.
My employer is extremely helpful in regards to my university work. Any extra time needed to study of watch webinars is always given. Also regularly meetings take place to check my progress and any organisation regarding exam invigilation and room booking is dealt with by other staff which allows me more time to focus on my studies.
I receive really good support from MMU in general. If I have any questions regarding the course, released content, assignments and exams etc. I can email and most of the time will receive a reply within a day. Regular study skills run as well based of various topics and these are very helpful in achieving the best possible grades.
I somewhat believe the qualification helps me perform better as it has improved my organisation skills and some content applies directly to the theory of what I do in my day to day role. However a majority of the content is not relevant to my role and therefore holds no bearing on how well I perform as a result.
There are regular charity events, networking events and organised activities. These are organised by various employees and can be found on the company newsletter that we recieve regularly. If you are organising something your self then the company is very supportive of this and will help you spread the word about such events.
Yes
Can be very good pay, most of the people are very friendly and there is good chance for progression as long as you are prepared to work hard. The job role is safe and the chances of you losing the job or being unhappy in the work place are very slim.
Try to have experience in a similar role beforehand to boost your chances of securing an interview. Research a little around the company background so you can have an understanding of the ‘big picture’ and the end-goal of the part you will play in the process. Be friendly and communicate openly and honestly.
