My day to day jobs consist of collecting concrete samples from building sites, taking them back to a laboratory. I then test the concrete samples from the days before and put the results into our system which completes our course. I also complete coursework that is part of my course.
My knowledge has been expanded about the industry im working in. Working in concrete can sound boring, however it can be very interesting because you can be surprised by the facts. Although it can be tricky, it is quickly picked up and even having small knowledge takes you a long way.
Programme is mostly enjoyable, however can be boring at times as your day to day work life gets quite repetitive, but i have to travel from Norfolk up-to Retford every month to attend training at Tarmacs College and get to stay in a hotel for a few nights and I find that quite fun, along with the training days that are enjoyable.
When the course first started, it was not very organised because we were the first class to ever do this course as it was a new one. But as the course has progressed, the organisation has improved massively and it has really made a difference and made it a lot easier.
Employers offer many different types of support and have an overall good support system. This includes support with the actual job itself as well as mental health support and other things like that. There is always someone to go to if you need support as well as online support too.
The support with training is absolutely brilliant. The actual training lessons are delivered well and there is endless support. Even when you are not at training, support is just one email away. If you’re struggling with you’re work, you can get extra time to complete work and your mental state will always be considered.
Having the qualification and training helps give you a deeper understanding of the job you are doing which can not only make your job more enjoyable but can leave you less stressed when you actually know what you are doing. The job without the training would leave you a bit confused.
I have not had the opportunity to take part in an extra curricular activity and have not even heard it mentioned before but I have not been with the company long so do not know the different opportunities that may possibly come up throughout my time with the company.
Yes
They are over all good employers for apprentices and offer a great pay if you are just leaving school, however I would not recommend the apprenticeship for someone who needs a larger income as have seen people have to leave the course as they are not making enough money to support their family.
Be prepared for things to suddenly pop up. Being prepared and flexible are great traits to have for the company, that’s in my experience, but Tarmac may be different to someone else’s but where I work my only advice would be to be confident in what you’re doing.
