  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme is flexible and understanding, when we enter busy periods and are unable to complete the normal workload, the requirements can change to suit me. I also find that the barrier for entry is not high and the content is highly relevant to my profession, helping me expand on what skills I already know.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme has just switched its organisational tool over to a new system which has immensely helped me understand what is required of me. Previously, it would be monthly meetings with my trainer who would detail my workload and review my performance, now I can find all the information I need online on a week by week basis with tools to help me.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer provides as much support as I need and is always encouraging me to continue my NVQ progress towards higher levels. If I am in need of personal time or further coaching of a particular skill, my employer is willing to help. It also helps that my NVQ is directly relevant to my job.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider meets with me on a regular basis and is willing to alter their calendar to suit my needs. They also have a duty of care towards me and not only check on my workload by my health and mental wellbeing.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification is helping my further expand my current skillset in more detail. The NVQ matches up with what on the job training I have already been provided, however it is much more aimed towards the UK as a whole which helps me see how my current skills match up to the industry as a whole.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • My work has a medium sized team and as such we organised activities and groups among ourselves. Our employer does provide seasonal bonuses which we can spend on day events of our choice for our group. There will also be training days or meet up days for people in the area of the same job title which are usually held annually.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Marston's to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It varies greatly on which team and business you work with, however that is the same for any other job. Specifically towards the team and business I work in, I am greatly pleased, it was not a job I anticipated doing for a longer period but the support I have received convinced me to stay.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Marston's?
  • There are many businesses across the UK and the experience can vary due to the variation in business types but the company as a whole is focusing on training and support for their staff more so than I have seen in other competitive hospitality businesses. It is a demanding job but there are benefits and support that make up for it.
